TEMERLOH: Business establishments should install closed-circuit television (CCTV) system in their premises to help authorities in deterring crime effectively.

OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Aziz Salleh said footages obtained from the CCTV system could assist police to identify and nab suspected criminals promptly.

"In line with the safe city concept, the installation of CCTV is one of the initiatives which can help to enhance public safety and confidence.

"For example in Bentong district, some 80% of criminal activities in Genting Highlands are resolved with the help of CCTV footages in strategic locations as evidence," he said during a dialogue session with business operators and the private sector at the police housing complex near here.

ACP Abdul Aziz said among the establishments which should seriously consider installing CCTVs were petrol stations, goldsmiths, banks and authorised money lenders.

He said houseowners who could afford should also install CCTVs to monitor their premises round-the-clock.

"They should choose a good camera surveillance system with at least two megapixel resolution and storage of images up to 30 days.

"When if the need arises, these images can provide police with the much needed information to identify and apprehend culprits or wrongdoers," he said, adding that the footages could also be tendered as exhibits in court during proceedings.

ACP Abdul Aziz said some of the present CCTVs were just for show as it could not record images clearly to help the authorities.

He said Temerloh district would lead the way in pushing for the installation of more high quality CCTVs and Safecam in the neighbourhood.
