Drug lord nabbed by police after midnight raid on his house Posted: 11 Jan 2013 01:01 AM PST TEMERLOH: An armed drug dealer was nabbed after a fierce struggle after the police stormed his house while he was sleeping. The suspect who tried to flee was subdued shortly after midnight on Tuesday in an unnumbered house in Kampung Padang Tenggala, Seberang Temerloh near here. OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Aziz Salleh said a revolver with six live bullets tucked behind the suspect's waist was seized. He said other items seized included four spent shells, a smoke grenade, a knuckle duster, 180.3gm heroin and 1,040 Erimin 5 pills, RM1,100 in cash and a car reported stolen in Air Tawar, Penang. "The suspect, aged 47, who goes by the nickname of Pak Lang @ Boei is high on the wanted list and is a key drug leader. "He had three previous convictions for drug-related offences and tested positive for morphine," he told a press conference at the district police headquarters here. ACP Abdul Aziz said checks showed the drugs were smuggled into the country for distribution around Temerloh and Maran. He said police were in the midst of tracking down his gang members and believed the syndicate has been active for the past two years. "The suspect from Kampung Mengkarak, Bera, has been remanded and faces a mandatory death penalty under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, if convicted. "We are also investigating whether the suspect was linked to armed robberies and car thefts," he said. In a separate case, police also detained a 25-year-old dealer and seized 2,200 psychotropic pills worth RM110,000. ACP Abdul Aziz said acting on a tip-off, police intercepted a car by the roadside in Kampung Paya Siput, Lanchang at about 11.30pm on Tuesday. "The suspect tried to flee on foot before he was nabbed after a short chase and brief struggle. "The drugs were found in a sling bag on his shoulder," he said, adding that the suspect from Kota Baru, Kelantan was found positive for meth. Checks showed the drugs were meant for Temerloh, Lanchang and Maran. |
Posted: 11 Jan 2013 01:00 AM PST AYER HITAM: Wong Boon Hang has been a volunteer firefighter for six years. In addition for volunteer fighting, the 51-year-old grandfather is also activity involved in People's Volunteer Corps (Rela), Crisis Relief Squad of MCA (CRSM), Buddhist Tzu-Chi Merits Society Malaysia, Volunteer Patrol Scheme (SRS) and health clinic visitor board. "Volunteering as a firefighter in Ayer Hitam is a little different from some other areas. "Other volunteers and I are on call 24 hours to attend to emergencies such as road accidents, fire and flood, besides, we also carry out patrolling to ensure safety in our neighbourhood. "We also catch snake, get rid of bees, spray for misquotes, help in funerals and gotong-royong and others," he said. Born and raised in Ayer Hitam new village, Wong said he would pay attention to things happening around him since young. He would stop his vehicle and help people involved in road accidents or joined other residents for neighbourhood watch. He joined the firefighting volunteer programme officially in 2007 and had to be trained as a firefighter handling emergency situations, fire engines and equipment, response to victims' needs, medical emergency etc. "I'm very lucky to have a supportive family, friends and neighbours, they not only give me all the moral support that I need, they also actively participate in the volunteer jobs," said the plantation worker. To date, Wong has more than 160 people, aged between 18 and 60, taking part in firefighting and various other volunteer programmes in the small town. "We have some 40 active members who will leave everything behind and rush to help after receiving emergency calls. "We are all ordinary people such as construction workers, contractors, farmers, tow truck drivers, small business owners and some self-employed and employees. "This is a group of people who sincerely work hard for safety and peace of our village. They are also passionate about helping others," he said. Wong said the worst ever experience he had was when a single mother and her toddler died in a fire in Parit Bilal a few years ago. The baby was found in the arms of her mother. "It was heartbreaking," he said. Since the volunteers have no roof over their head at the moment, Wong's house has become the temporary volunteer fire station. They have three fire trucks and rescue equipment provided by the Fire and Rescue Department and donations from the public. "Everyone will come to my house, pick up firefighting gear and jump into the fire truck and go," he said. Wong said on several occasions he had to run out to respond to a fire or medical emergency during dinner and outing with his family. His wife would ask their children to join him if the situation allows. "Once in a while, I will ask my son to bring his three-year-old son to watch rescue works. I thought my children about helping others and I want my grandchildren have the same exposure too," he added. Wong said he was proud to be a resident of Ayer Hitam, where voluntary work is synonym to the people here and be part of their life here regardless of race and background. |
