Muay Thai champ confident of taking down young sensation Posted: 11 Jan 2013 03:29 AM PST I WILL hit him before he takes me down". Those were the confident words of Saiful "The Vampire" Merican when asked to comment about his upcoming fight against Gianni Subba, a known grappler with a one-punch knockout power next month. Saiful will square off against Subba at the Putra Indoor Stadium, Bukit Jalil on Feb 2, where the duo will battle it out in ONE Fighting Championship (ONE FC) Return of Warriors flyweight bout. Saiful, who hails from Terengganu, is a Muay Thai champion and is looking to record a win on his debut. "I have been training really hard and I will do my best as I am fighting in front of my family and friends," said the 25-year-old who fights out of Merican Muay Thai in Solaris Mont Kiara. Subba, who is currently training in Thailand, made an impressive ONE FC debut last year by knocking out his opponent in the first round but Saiful is unfazed by Subba's performance. "I watched his ONE FC debut but I couldn't see much technique as the fight ended quickly. I have a good training team and I am confident about my abilities," said Saiful who is being coached by ONE FC legend Arnaud Lepont specially for this fight. "He is also very young (Subba is 19 years old) and young fighters are usually more aggressive. I have more experience and I believe I can handle him," said Saiful who has been training Muay Thai since the age of 12. Besides Saiful vs Subba, ONE FC will also feature the first two bouts of the inaugural four-man Malaysian national featherweight championship tournament as national silat champion AJ "Pyro" Lias Mansor squares off against Muay Thai champion Jian Kai Chee and the slugger from Johor Melvin Yeoh will look to score an impressive win in his ONE FC debut against Raymond Tiew. Malaysian MMA fans will also get to watch a featherweight world championship title fight between Eric "The Natural" Kelly and Honorio "T he Rock" Banario. Prolonged water disruption forces Ampang folk to seek alternatives Posted: 11 Jan 2013 03:22 AM PST FROM business premises forced to close to people taking showers out in the open, the situation in Ampang caused by prolonged unscheduled water cut is becoming worse by the day. "All the toilets in the mall have been closed for the last few days because there is no water to flush or clean it anymore," Zuraida Halim, 29, a staff at UO Superstore in Galaxy Ampang Shopping Centre said. She said their water supply had been erratic since late last month and had dried up completely since a few days ago. "For the last 10 days or so, we have been constantly looking out for the water tankers and collecting water whenever and from wherever we can," she said. Her colleagues who live nearby said, the tankers had even come at 2am once, and even then, there was a long queue for water. "When we use the toilet, we buy mineral water for flushing," said Zuraida. "Yesterday, the situation became really bad that we went to a nearby spring to get water," she said, adding that some restaurants had even resorted to using styrofoam plates. A salon owner, who did not want to be named, said she had no choice but to close her business for the last four days. Syabas supply tankers arrived at the shopping centre yesterday for the first time and this provided some relief. Petrol stations in Ampang were also not spared and toilets were made off limits to all. Meanwhile, the spring, located along the hills near Taman Tun Abdul Razak, saw many flocking there for a bath. This open-air spring had been there for many years and Ammar Shariffuddin Razali, 34, was found relaxing at this spot with his two children Nurfarah Alia Ammar, three, and Iman Haris Putra Ammar, two, after a bath. "This is our first visit here. My children had a fun time bathing as it was not crowded," Ammar said, adding that the place would be packed in the evenings. He said in Ampang Mewah, where he lived, scuffles were breaking out at the supply tankers. He decided not to depend on it. "I will leave the tankers for others like the elderly to utilise. I will look for water supply elsewhere," he said. Others affected by the crisis also include staff manning the additional tankers from other states like Perak Water Board (LAP) staff Abdul Rahman Tajudin, 60, who has not been home since 10 days ago. "The longest water cut I experienced back home in Ipoh lasted three days. "I feel sorry for those affected here," he said. His work sometimes involves making six trips a day with little time to spare for sleep. |
