Beyonce lets others do talking on lip-synch drama

LOS ANGELES: Beyonce's lips remained sealed on Wednesday over her headline-making rendition of the U.S. national anthem at President Barack Obama's inauguration, leaving others to do the talking over whether she lip-synched to a pre-recorded track.

Celebrity magazine Us Weekly quoted a source saying the Grammy-winning artist was disappointed by the controversy she stirred by singing "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Monday's solemn ceremony using a backing track - and drew a comparison to late Italian opera singer Luciano Pavarotti.

As some of America's singing stars offered sympathy and understanding, an inaugural official, who declined to be identified, told CNN that Beyonce "did not sing live."

"Because she didn't have time to rehearse with the U.S. Marine Band, she decided to use her recording with the Marine Band," the official told CNN on Wednesday.

The U.S. Marine band said in a statement on Tuesday that no one in the band "is in a position to assess whether it was live or pre-recorded."

Us Weekly meanwhile quoted a different, also unidentified source, as saying "She did sing, but used a track."

"She didn't think there was anything wrong with it," the source told the celebrity magazine's website on Wednesday.

"Pavarotti has done it! It was freezing out, and if she messed up just one note, that would have been the story ... Everybody uses these tracks, and the music director advised it," the Us Weekly source added.

Pavarotti lip-synched his last performance, at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, because of the bitter weather and his failing health, according to orchestra conductor Leone Magiera in a 2008 book. The Italian tenor died in 2007 of pancreatic cancer at age 71.

Beyonce's publicist has declined to comment on the furor, but Aretha Franklin and Jennifer Lopez chimed in with their support.

"When I heard the news ... that she was pre-recorded I really laughed," Franklin, 70, who sang live at Obama's first inauguration in 2009, told ABC News.

"I thought it was funny because the weather down there was about 46 or 44 degrees and for most singers that is just not good singing weather ... she did a beautiful job with the pre-record ... next time I'll probably do the same."

Lopez told Jon Stewart on "The Daily Show" on Tuesday that many performers resort to using pre-recorded tracks.

"You know, sometimes it happens," Lopez said. "When you're in certain stadiums and in certain venues, they do pre-record things because you're going to have that terrible slapback."

Beyonce, 31, was giving her first major public performance since giving birth to a baby in January 2012.

On Sunday, she had posted on Instagram photo of herself in a recording studio holding the sheet music for "The Star-Spangled Banner."

She is due to take the spotlight again next month by performing, live, at the Feb. 3 Super Bowl halftime show.-Reuters

Beyonce 'did not sing live,' official tells CNN

WASHINGTON: Beyonce did not sing the US national anthem live at this week's public swearing-in ceremony of President Barack Obama for his second term, CNN quoted an inaugural official as saying Wednesday.

The R&B singer has yet to comment on the furor over whether or not she lip-synced the words on Monday to "The Star-Spangled Banner" before an estimated crowd of one million people on the National Mall in Washington.

"She did not sing live," the unidentified inaugural official was quoted as saying.

The official also told CNN that Beyonce herself has decided on Sunday not to perform live, as she had arrived too late to have proper rehearsal time with the US Marine Band.

On Tuesday, the US Marine Corps confirmed that, instead of its band playing live to accompany Beyonce, a pre-recorded version of the anthem was used.

But it added that, as far as the Grammy-winning chart-topper's vocal performance was concerned, it was not in a position to say whether or not she sang live.

In Britain, a veteran audio engineer said it looked to him, after examining online videos, that Beyonce did indeed sing - but it was uncertain whether her singing was relayed over the loudspeakers to the sprawling audience.

"There's no question at all in my mind that she was singing as she stood on the stage and that it (her voice) was going into a microphone that was live," Ian Shepherd told AFP by telephone.

"The question is, who got to hear what came through that mic? Did it go out to the crowd?"

Soul legend Aretha Franklin and younger singing stars Alicia Keys, Jennifer Lopez and LeAnn Rimes sprung to Beyonce's defense, with Franklin saying it made sense to go with a backing track given the near-freezing temperatures.

"She did a beautiful job with the pre-record," Franklin, 70, who sang at Obama's first inauguration four years ago, told ABC News. "Next time I'll probably do the same."

Beyonce herself was last seen dining out in New Orleans late Monday after attending the inauguration with her hip-hop husband Jay-Z.

Beyonce rarely uses Twitter, but her Tumblr account features many photos from Monday as well as a video captioned: "Beyonce sings the national anthem ... at the 2013 presidential inauguration ceremony."

Shepherd, who has worked with musical acts as diverse as Culture Club, Tricky and the Berlin Philharmonic, examined at least three different online videos of Beyonce's performance.

On his website, Mastering-Media.co.uk, he said it was understandable that, on a cold day, Beyonce would favor a pre-recorded track over singing with the Marine Band, which by that point had been out in the open air for hours.

"Any singer would find it seriously difficult to put on a great performance to a band that was struggling to play in tune," he wrote.

"And for something this high-profile it's understandable that you'd want the best chance to get it right," he said.

Beyonce, who sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" at the Super Bowl last year, returns to the American football classic February 3 for its half-time show. She also has a documentary about her life airing on HBO television on February 16. -AFP
