| Malaysian music going supernova Posted: 16 Jan 2013 11:17 PM PST MALAYSIAN music is set to take another step towards international recognition. For the first time ever, there will be a showcase of Malaysian artistes at MIDEM, the largest music industry trade fair in the world. On Jan 27, MIDEM will be hosting a key music event called "Malaysian Supernova" at the Salon des Ambassadeurs in Cannes, France. Amongst the artistes who will be performing at the showcase include rockers Hujan and Bunkface, deejay extraordinaires Goldfish & Blink, pop songstresses Amanda Imani and Jaclyn Victor, R&B starlet Nadhira, electropop diva Ze! and reggae ambassador Sasi The Don. "We selected a list of artistes with good credentials in the music industry in Malaysia. All of the artistes come from different labels and represent different genres," said Ramani Ramalingam, deputy CEO of the Recording Industry Association of Malaysia (RIM). "A number of artistes initially selected could not make it due to scheduling conflicts and the selection was done by a public-private sector committee," he added. Another important criteria was for the acts to be able to perform and communicate in English. This initiative to expose Malaysian music abroad was funded by the Ministry of Information, Communications and Culture. "It's part of a larger initiative under the National Creative Industry Policy driven by Pemandu," said Ramani about this concerted effort by the Ministry of Information, Communications and Culture and RIM to jumpstart a Malaysian music export presence globally. Traditionally held during the Cannes Film Festival, MIDEM stands for "Marché International du Disque et de l'Edition Musicale", and is attended every year by thousands of international musicians, producers, talent scouts, and journalists; making it the perfect place to showcase Malaysian music.
