LOS ANGELES - NHL star Alex Ovechkin used Twitter to trumpet his engagement to tennis star Maria Kirilenko on Monday, posting a picture of the Russian sports power couple.

"We are engaged!!!!!!" tweeted 27-year-old Ovechkin, a star for the NHL's Washington Capitals who is playing in his home country during the lockout that has idled the North American league and threatens to wipe out the entire season.

The accompanying photo showed the pair, both wearing skates, posing arm in arm on a patch of outdoor ice.

Kirilenko, who will turn 26 in January, is a five-time winner on the WTA Tour who has been ranked as high as 12th in the world.

The two have been dating since late last year, and Ovechkin was on hand in July at the All England Club when she reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the first time. - AFP

Mexican Olympic medalist shot in head

MEXICO CITY: Noe Hernandez, a Mexican who won the silver medal in race walking at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, lost his left eye and was in serious condition Monday after being shot in the head in a bar, reports said.

Carlos Castillo Rangel, the surgeon who treated Hernandez, was quoted as saying that the 34-year-old ex-athlete was in "very serious" but stable condition after being hit in the left, frontal area of his head.

Hernandez was at the "Queen of Kings" nightclub in the central state of Mexico on Sunday when three gunmen burst in and shot at customers, killing two people and seriously wounding two others, the prosecutor's office said.

Hernandez, who serves as sports secretary for the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) in Mexico state, underwent three surgeries after being struck by a 9mm bullet.

"The surgeries were successful, without any complications. We must wait and see his progress in intensive care," Castillo Rangel said.

Bars are often raided by gang members in Mexico, a nation beset by a drug war that has left more than 60,000 people dead in the past six years. -AFP

Zheng and Kuznetsova make early exits in Auckland

AUCKLAND: Defending champion Zheng Jie crashed out in the first round of the ASB Classic women's tennis tournament yesterday, falling to rising American star Jamie Hampton 7-5, 6-1.

Two-time Grand Slam winner Svetlana Kuznetsova was also sent packing on the opening day, beaten in a three-set marathon by Kiki Bertens of Holland.

Zheng Jie, seeded fourth in the tournament that serves as a warm-up to next month's Australian Open, raced to an early 3-0 lead in the opening set before Hampton fought back to level at 5-5.

The German-born American, who has soared up the rankings from 137 to 70 over the past year, then broke Zheng Jie in a love game before taking out the set with an ace in the following game.

The second set was all Hampton, as she used her strong cross-court forehand to dominate the more experienced Chinese in one hour 20 minutes.

In blustery conditions, the 21-year-old Bertens fought back from a set down to beat former world No. 2 Kuznetsova 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 7-5.

Bertens, who has risen in the rankings from 184 to 63 during 2012, grew in confidence despite serving 10 double faults in the strong wind.

After losing the opening set tie-break in the 2'33:00 marathon, she held her concentration against the 28-year-old Russian veteran, who is making a comeback after a first-round knee injury at Wimbledon ended her 2012 season.

American Christina McHale was the second ranked player dumped out on the opening day, with the seventh seed losing in straight sets to France's Pauline Parmentier 6-4, 6-1.

Tournament top seed Agnieszka Radwanska has her opening match today against 2011 winner Greta Arn, who had to rely on the luck of the draw to make the field this year. — AFP
