Be wary of abductors

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 03:41 PM PST

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah police is reminding the public to be more aware of their childrens movements and whereabouts following claims of child abductors at loose.

Sabah Commissioner of Police Datuk Hamza Taib said parents should monitor their children properly and advice them not to be too trusting and follow strangers easily.

"Although we have no reports of such abductions yet, it is better that parents keep a close eye on their children," he said.

He said there were also instances of children being reported missing, but turned out to be a case of them going out without informing their family members and not returning home promptly.

Hamza was commenting on some online postings stating that there were several sightings of men abducting children but returning them to their families afterwards.

He said there seem to be viral hoaxes on child abduction cases around the state.

The latest posting on a social network had alleged wrote that a child was kidnapped at a business premise at Sabindo town of Sabah's southeast Tawau district.

Tawau police have refuted the allegation and said no police report have been made in connection to the said incident.

Hamza said officers have nevertheless been ordered to find the person responsible for posting the information on Facebook.

Meanwhile Sabah former Chief Minister Datuk Yong Teck Lee said police should warn foreigners against causing harm towards locals instead of warning people to be wary of online information.

He was commenting on Hamza's warning against bloggers posting information regarding the death of 16-year-old Norikoh Saliwah who was found dead at the road side in Kota Marudu last Sunday.

He said the authorities should do more about foreigners, as they are the ones posing more threat to national security and not Internet sites.

Former Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Wilfred Bumburing also wants no stone left unturned in the investigation of Norikoh's death.

"If indeed police discovers in the course of their investigation that foreign nationals are involved in the death of the girl then what I have said in the Parliament about foreign elements posing serious security threat in the country is true," he said.

"This means what Minister in the Prime Minister Department Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said in response to my queries about foreigners as not posing any form of security threat are lies to hoodwink the people," he added.

LABIS: The government has never sidelined orang asli community in ensuring they enjoy the education and housing facilities like any other races in the country.

Labis MP Datuk Chua Tee Yong said the standard of living of orang asli has improved tremendously compared to 20 years ago through various programmes implemented by the government.

"Despite being one of the smallest groups compared to other races, Orang asli's contributions to the nation is equally vital," said Chua after visiting Kampung Orang Asli Sungai Lenek in Bekok here recently.

Chua, who is Agriculture and Agro-based Industry deputy minister, said two primary schools had been built in Labis constituency, one in Kampung Kudong and another one in Segamat Kecil, to cater to the educational needs of the orang asli community.

"Since the opening of the schools, there is a great increase in number of orang asli students.

"It shows that there is higher awareness on the importance of education among the orang asli community," he added.

Meanwhile, Kampung Orang Asli Sungai Lenek village development and security committee chairman Yaakop Mad Yusof said the orang asli's needs were well taken care of by the government.

"The houses, lands, plantations and various amenities built by the government for us," he said, adding that education is very important and urged all parents must send their children to schools.

"We don't want to be left out in terms of education, we hope no one left the village to go to town and don't even know the route to come home because there are lack of knowledge," he added.

BATU PAHAT: A field trip to visit an operating landfill in Kulai can be planned to bring villagers who are concerned about a proposed Bukit Payong landfill.

Councillor Abdullah Ishak said many villagers staying near Bukit Payong were against the project and wanted the project by the state government to stop.

"This may due to lack of information and understanding about the operation of a landfill and a field trip will bring textbook to life.

"The people need the facts and by bring them to see the operation of Seelong landfill in Kulai will help them to have a clearer picture to counter their worries," said Abdullah at the Batu Pahat Municipal full board meeting here recently.

Abdullah said the Seelong landfill has a good management system in handling waste.

"If there are not explanations, the problems will not resolved," he said, adding that the better understanding of a landfill would also prevent villagers from mislead by certain quarters.

Last week, a group of villagers from Kampung Mohd Noor held a protest against the proposed Bukit Payong landfill near their homes.

They gathered and carried banners with signs calling the government to scrap the plan. They group said they were afraid that the landfill would pollute the water, air and land.

They also claimed that they were not given much information on the operation of the landfill.

The 20mil facility — built on a 40ha plot — expected be ready by the end of next year.

Currently, all waste collection from the district were sent to the Simpang Renggam dumpsite, which was almost at its maximum capacity.

In a related development, Abdul-lah said the municipal council was seeking permissions from Muar Municipal Council and Labis District Council to allow waste from Batu Pahat to be disposed at their respective areas temporarily.

"We have problems sending the waste to the Simpang Renggam dumpsite because of landslide and damaged access road to the dumpsite. It needs time to repair.

"If we don't dispose the waste fast enough it will accumulate and cause problem," he said, adding that Batu Pahat produced between 150 and 200 metric tonnes of garbage everyday.
