TEMERLOH: A new police headquarters here would be operational from next year, said Pahang police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Sharifuddin Abdul Ghani.

DCP Sharifuddin added that the new building along Jalan Maran-Temerloh was estimated to cost about RM50mil.

"The contractor will hand over the exterior of the building to us before the end of the year.

"Construction work commences on the interior early next year before it is fully operational," he said after visiting the building accompanied by OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Aziz Salleh recently.

DCP Sharifuddin said due to the increase in population and rapid economic growth, a new and bigger district police headquarters with proper facilities was needed to meet the people's expectations.

He said construction work on the project had started since 2010 and it was on schedule.

"All the departments will be moving in including CID, narcotics, management, logistics and a lock-up.

"The office of the OCPD and his deputy will also be located within the premises," he said.

DCP Sharifuddin reminded all personnel in the district to carry out their work professionally and diligently to enhance the image of the police force.

Council to investigate dead fishes found in pond

KUANTAN: Schools of ikan keli (catfish) were found dead in the pond at Taman Kejiranan here, causing residents to express their concern.

The dead fishes were discovered by joggers at the public park who alerted the authorities.

Besides the ikan keli, the carcass of a monitor lizard was also spotted.

Kuantan councillor Andy Chiew said he visited the area with several officials after being informed of the matter.

Chiew said they were not sure if the fish had died from pollution or natural causes.

"However, the catfish is not likely to survive in the pond as it is a type of freshwater fish.

"There is a possibility that someone may have dumped the dead fish into the pond but we will investigate further," he said.

Chiew said the council would deploy their workers to clean up the carcasses as soon as possible to prevent any foul stench.

He also rubbished claims that it was an "end of the world" sign as some parties might be playing a prank to create anxiety.

MALACCA: The state Customs Department apprehended two individuals believed to be masterminds behind an illicit cigarette smuggling syndicate here.

The duo, who are in their mid-30s, were placed high on the department's wanted list; their movements had been tracked by enforcement officers for several months before they were detained.

The two were also believed to have smuggled a total of 912,480 cigarette butts including the clove type over the past one week.

At a press conference, Department director Datuk Mohd Nasir Said divulged that the duo had stored the contrabands at a store piling foodstuff in Durian Tunggal, here.

"We arrested the first person at a roadblock along Jalan Ayer Keroh-Bemban at 10am and the second was tracked based on the information provided by the accomplice," he said.

Mohd Nasir said the two were also believed to be part of the organised syndicate specialising in smuggling such contrabands.

He said a van with 52,480 cigarette butts worth RM3,000 with unpaid duty close to RM26,030.08 were also seized during the operation.

"We managed to confiscate a total of 860,000 cigarette butts from 50 cartons comprising various brands," he said.

Mohd Nasir said the total contrabands seized from the store was valued at RM43,000 with an unpaid tax of RM426,560.

Based on these, he noted that both seizure came to approximately RM500,000 in unpaid taxes.

Mohd Nasir added his officers were now probing the two under Section 135(1)(e) Customs Act 1957 which carries three years of imprisonment or fined 20 times the value of the contraband seized.
