Liow: Yearly medical examination important for citizens above 30 years

Posted: 20 Dec 2012 08:24 PM PST

TEMERLOH: All Malaysians above the age of 30 should go for a yearly medical check-up as a precautionary measure to detect non-communicable illnesses, Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said.

Liow said illnesses linked to lifestyle such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity and high cholesterol levels were affecting many people every year.

"Latest statistics from the health authorities showed that both communicable and non-communicable diseases are recording a steady increase.

"This is definitely not good for the country and urgent steps must be taken to address the situation lest more citizens would need to seek medical assistance and treatments," he said in his speech during the launching of a health carnival in Mentakab near here recently.

The text of his speech was read out by Mentakab assemblyman Datuk Chuah Boon Seong, who represented him to officiate the programme.

Also present were state executive councillor and Lanchang assemblyman Datuk Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin.

Liow, who is also the Pahang MCA chief and Bentong MP, said since 2000, the ministry had provided test kits to all government clinics and hospitals to enable more people to undergo health checks.

He said high-risk groups should monitor their blood pressure, cholesterol and sugar levels as a precautionary measure.

"They should eat moderately, avoid oily, sweet and salty food as well as exercise regularly.

"Over indulgence in such food and lack of exercise are detrimental to the people's health," he said.

Liow said the ministry would continue to organise programmes to create awareness on the importance of a healthy lifestyle among the public.

Citing the walk 10,000 steps a day campaign, he said it would not succeed without active public participation.

"All these activities need the support of the public without which it would not achieve the desired results.

"The public must play a role and there should be determination to lead a healthy lifestyle and observe a balance diet," he said.

Liow said the ministry would also go all out to educate the people especially students and women against taking up smoking.

He said since youths were the future leaders of the country, they should be reminded on the danger of smoking.

"Our long-term aim is to reduce the number of smokers in the country and we would start our campaigns in schools," he said, adding that parents should also remind their children on the hazard of smoking.

On the carnival, about 1,000 people from all walks of life turned up to participate in a 6km walk around the town centre.

There were also public performances, free health checks, children colouring contest, cooking demonstration and health-related exhibitions.

MALACCA: Avillion Legacy Malacca celebrated the Yuletide season by sharing hope and joy with less fortunate children.

For the seventh consecutive year, the prestigious hotel feted children from four charity homes here during Christmas season.

This year, some 60 underprivileged children from a home were treated at the hotel's popular glass dome lobby recently.

The event was a part of the hotel's corporate social responsibility as well as caring for the underprivileged children during the sharing season.

The party started with appearances by Santa Claus and Santarinas arriving in a Christmas decorated trishaws.

The hotel staff then distributed candies to the delighted young ones, bringing smiles on their faces.

One of the orphan, Shanmathi Ramani, 16, from Salvation Army Home said she and her friends were grateful to dine at the hotel and they were excited to perform Christmas caroling for the crowd.

While savouring an array of delicacies, a quiz session and some fun-filled games were conducted by the friendly hotel staff.

"I felt very thankful that the less fortunate children are still loved and cared by the corporate organisation," said Persatuan Ibubapa Muhibbah Melaka (PIBM) secretary Adriene Ang.

The meaningful afternoon party ended with the distribution of presents to all children by the hotel's general manager Low Kee Nam.

KUANTAN: In conjunction with Christmas, residents of the Handicapped and Mentally Retarded Children Centre Kuantan were treated to a buffet dinner by The Zenith Hotel.

The special guests were met on arrival by its rooms division manager Charles B. Peter, marketing communications executive Aini Said and other hotel staff.

They were then ushered into the hotel lobby and entertained with a Christmas Carol performance by the youth choir from Khoo Academy of Music & Arts.

Peter then performed a simple gimmick to launch the event by breaking the Christmas tree ice sculpture to attain a special stocking to be hung on the Christmas tree.

He said the programme was part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative to celebrate the joyful season with the less fortunate.

"We want to remind the society not to neglect the needy particularly children with special needs during auspicious occasions.

"Let us assist these unique groups and spread the warmth and joy of Christmas," he said.

Peter said guests were encouraged to make contributions and their noble deeds would be represented by a coloured Christmas stocking.

He said the management would organise more charitable programmes in the near future to give back to the community.

Meanwhile, the centre's supervisor James Perumal expressed his gratitude to the hotel for selecting them to take part in its CSR programme this year.

"We hope more firms and individuals will come forward to support and contribute to the needy and less fortunate.

"As we celebrate the festive season, residents in welfare homes should be reassured that they are not forgotten and are still considered as part of the society," he said.

After a group photo, the guests were feted to a sumptuous buffet spread before departing for home.
