Auspicious wedding for couples

Posted: 16 Dec 2012 06:10 PM PST

JOHOR BARU: A total of 55 couples braved the heat to successfully exchange their vows during a mass multi-racial garden wedding in conjunction with the auspicious date 12.12.12 in Taman Merdeka here.

Despite fanning themselves with leaflets and brochures, the couples comprising 52 Chinese, two Malays and an Indian, exchanged rings after a gong was sounded at 12.12pm sharp.

The mass wedding, themed "Happy Household, Prosperous Nation" was organised by the Johor Theng Chuan Tan Clan Association in collaboration with the Johor Baru City Council (MBJB).

There was also a huge crowd of family members and friends who had gathered to congratulate the married couples.

Couples M. Rajesh, 26 and R. Vasanti, 25, who are working in a bank as customer service officers said they initially thought that his brother in-law was playing a prank on him when he asked the couple to attend the wedding yesterday.

"But we never expected it to be done in such a large scale and we were delighted to be part of this celebration," he said, adding that they have both known each other for five years while they were still in college.

"Everything happened so suddenly as we only got engaged on Dec 7," Rajesh said.

Couples Sia Wei Kit, 23, and his wife, Tan Chu Xun, 28, said that they were elated to take part in the event along with many other couples.

"We were planning to go on a holiday during this period when we found out about the wedding. It was extra special when we even had relatives who travelled all the way from Canada and the United Kingdom to be with us," he said.

Sia, who works as a salesman, has known his wife for seven years and hoped to reschedule his holiday to another date.

Apart from a photography session at the viewing deck, about 600 fishes were released to signify the smooth delivery of the newly-weds' children.

Johor Theng Chuan Tan Clan Association vice president Tan Lian said besides the change in setting of a normal wedding to an outdoor theme, the mass wedding also is a trademark of the 1Malaysia concept.

"The garden wedding party provides a fresh and different atmosphere while providing an identity for Malaysians," she added.

Tribunal orders automative service centre to replace engine

JOHOR BARU: An automotive service centre at Johor Jaya was ordered to replace an engine after attempting to cheat the customer by replacing it with an incompatible engine.

Chen Chon Hwa, 50, said he was relieved after the award was handed out by the tribunal court here.

"I had problems with my car in May this year and decided to send it to their workshop, however after spending RM4,000 in repairs including an engine change, even more problems arose," he said.

"I knew the new engine was incompatible when the engine oil started to leak, the temperature was abnormally high, and the car jerked when I shifted gears.

"I was concerned for my safety as I drive the car to work every day but I now need not worry anymore," he added.

Consumer Claims Tribunal Court president Badius Zaman Ahmad then ordered for the company CL Automotive Service Centre to replace Chen's engine with a compatible one within the next 14 days.

Meanwhile, a travel agency was ordered to pay RM524 for failing to provide a three-day two-night stay in Hong Kong, as promised in their voucher.

Businesswoman Kee Siow Choo, 35, said she obtained the voucher upon purchasing RM13,888 worth of furniture during a furniture fair held here in December last year.

"I was given several hotel choices for my accommodation in Hong Kong, but I was told that the hotels that I requested were fully booked and I ended up paying RM524 for my stay as I had already purchased my flight tickets," she said.

"When I checked the same hotels for availability on other websites, there were still rooms for booking," she said adding that she felt cheated.

Badius then ordered the travel agency A Asia Holidays Sdn Bhd to pay Kee a compensation of RM524 within the next 14 days.

Flood mitigation programmes to be carried out in six spots within district

Posted: 16 Dec 2012 06:11 PM PST

JOHOR BARU: Efforts are underway to carry out flood mitigation programmes in at least six spots within the district.

District officer Amran Abdul Rahman said the flood prone areas were Kg Jaya Sepakat, Kg Laut, Kg Pasir, Pandan, Kempas Permatang and Kg Mohd Amin.

"We hope that the Johor Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) will be able to carry out the necessary studies before the mitigation works are carried out," he told reporters after visiting Kg Masjid in Pekan Masai to check on flooding problems in the area.

Amran was accompanied by Permas assemblyman Datuk M.M. Samy and Johor Jaya Assemblyman Tan Cher Puk.

He added that the cost to help mitigate the flood problem in this area was expected to run into millions of ringgit and DID would first have to carry out the necessary surveys together with consultants for about three months.

"Among them include widening Sg Masai and building another waterway to help the water flow better," he said, adding that the mitigation works would span about 1.5km.

Amran added that Pekan Masai has been experiencing floods for the past seven to eight years but lately it was more of flash floods.

"This has affected about 100 families here. Previously the water level reached between 2.1m and 2.4m high. Now the water level usually touched between 0.9m and 1.2m," he added.

He added that the last flash flood in the area was middle of the year.

Meanwhile, a trader in the area known as Lim hoped that the flood mitigation works would be carried out soon as the situation was bad especially during the rainy days.

"The flooding has been going on for such a long time. I hope that the authorities will also clean up the river and also repair the river's embankments which have collapsed due to erosion," he added.

The floods in Johor in recent weeks, a total of 3,328 people from Batu Pahat, Kluang, Ledang, Kulaijaya and Johor Baru were evacuated.

Batu Pahat topped the list with a total of 2,641 people.

All the people have since returned home.
