Donate to save lives

Posted: 11 Dec 2012 12:41 AM PST

TEMERLOH: Public awareness on the need and importance to donate blood is still low, Temerloh district officer Datuk Tariff Abdul Rahman said.

Tariff said the public should be constantly reminded that donating blood was a social responsibility to be performed voluntarily.

"All citizens who are healthy should be encouraged to give blood in order to save lives.

"Many may not be aware that some of their family members, relatives or friends could be one of the recipients due to the selfless act of others.

"As such, I hope those who are eligible should come forward without delay," he said after launching the district level Blood Donation Day celebrations here recently.

Also present were Sultan Ahmad Shah Hospital director Datuk Dr Bahari Awang Ngah and head of pathology unit Dr Nor Suhaila Md Riffin.

The event was organised by hospital's blood bank to replenish its depleting stock.

Tariff said noble act of donating blood must be inculcated from young and instilled by parents to their children.

He said the fear to donate must be discarded in the minds of the people.

"There are also some who have a wrong perception that donating blood would bring about side effects and resulting in fatigue and weakness.

"This is not true as scientific studies showed that blood donated would be replenished within the body system within four hours," he said, adding that regular donors would also be more healthy.

Tariff said the need for blood supply was especially pertinent during school holidays and festive periods when more people were commuting on the roads and highways, resulting in a higher rate of accidents and during outbreak cases such as dengue fever.

"No one can predict the future and one day, we may need others to help us.

"It is better to make the first move since we are blessed with a healthy body," he said, adding that helping others in distress was a universal value.

Adnan: PM will make up his mind on list of candidates after careful consideration

KUANTAN: Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's final choice of the candidates to be fielded will be based on the reports from all level of party grassroots that he had gathered.

Pahang Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob said for that reason, the president has the wise choice of candidates and his decision has to be accepted by all.

Adnan said Najib knows better on who will and should be fielded to represent the party in the coming general election.

He said the question of who and what position in the party an individual holds should not be an issue as party members should focus on the victory of Barisan Nasional.

Adnan said both leaders and members in the party have to abide by his (Najib's) final decision and stay loyal to the party.

"The president's final choice of candidates would also be based on the full reports from all levels of parties that he has received.

"Najib's choices are made after careful considerations and we have to accept them with an open heart," Adnan said after officiating a circumsation in Padang Kemunting here.

Adnan said the positions that they held in the party or as committee members at division level would not necessarily be the criteria for picking a candidate as he or she may not be winnable.

For example, if we want a more religious person to contest in a particular seat, he or she may not be among the committee members of the division or branches.

"However, since he or she is the most winnable candidate who could garner more votes, preferred by the respective voters, then they that individual will be fielded.

"At the same time, the leaders in that particular constituency have to accept and abide by the top leadership's choice of candidates without prejudice and hard feelings.

"More importantly all must get to work, work as a team, give their full co-operation with no attempts to sabataging the party," he said.

Adnan said such situation needed loyalty from all party members.

"They have to bear in mind that it is important that the party wins," he said, adding that he already has the list of candidates to be fielded but the final decision made by the the party president.

Adnan said any efforts of lobbying would not be necessary as "PM knows better" (on who to field).

He said members should ask themselves what they could contribute to the party and not what position they should get when they are in Umno.

"The party's continuous struggle for the nation and people's interest are the priorities above all other factors and interest," he said.
