Listen to the elderly

Posted: 19 Dec 2012 06:03 AM PST

I REFER to the article titled "Section 17 residents want govt clinic" in StarMetro on Dec 15.

I'm saddened at the plight of many senior citizens of Section 17 Petaling Jaya who find it difficult to go to Universiti Hospital for simple ailments such as cough and cold. Neither could they afford to seek treatment in private clinics.

They are in urgent need of primary medical care in their neighbourhood, believed to be close to 10,000 senior citizens.

As a senior citizen myself, I fully support their appeal to the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) to build a 1Malaysia Clinic in Jalan 17/27.

The elderly folk's difficulty in going to UMMC for treatment is understandable due to transport problems.

I hope that MBPJ with the collaboration of Section 17 councillor Ghazali Shaari will consider their appeal favourably and as a matter of urgency.

Meanwhile, arrangements should be made to provide the much needed Mobile Medical Clinic for Section 17 residents, since they have made a request for this clinic way back in 2010.

At the same time the request made by Taman Sri Manja residents to have the mobile clinic open more than once a week is very reasonable and therefore should be given urgent attention by the local authority.

Get rid of rubbish dump

Posted: 19 Dec 2012 06:03 AM PST

AS HUNDREDS of people gather with their families and friends daily at the SS2 hawker stalls, the horrible stench from the rubbish dump nearby is overbearing. Rats, maggots and flies swarm the place. Worse, they pose a major health hazard to Petaling Jaya folks who frequent the stalls for curry laksa, char kuey teow and steamboat.

On Dec 15 at 9.30pm, I went to a nearby restaurant to have my favourite dessert. The sight and smell of the rubbish put me off. Immediately, I decided to snap some pictures with a view to finding a long-term solution.

For the hundreds of patrons, perhaps they have resigned to the fact that the rubbish dump is here to stay and the authorities cannot solve the problem.

Who is throwing the rubbish there?

In the past, many had lodged one complaint after another with no solution in sight.

Enough is enough. This simply is unacceptable.

Let me come out with a radical idea: get rid of the rubbish dump altogether. Disallow any one to throw rubbish there or anywhere nearby.

So where do these people dispose off the rubbish? This is where Petaling Jaya City (MBPJ) plays an important role. Provide suitable size bins for rubbish. We need an efficient rubbish disposal service daily.

I challenge MBPJ to solve this problem once and for all within 60 days.

Nothing is impossible if the determination is strong.

I call on all stakeholders to work together for a better tomorrow.

Sometimes we need to be innovative and firm to solve a problem like this.

On behalf of thousands of Petaling Jaya folks, I would like to see positive action on this matter.
