Posted: 03 Nov 2012 08:51 AM PDT

SEREMBAN: Pakatan Rakyat's first leg of its nationwide "People's Uprising Assembly" kicked off Saturday evening at a large field in Seremban Jaya near here.

Several thousand people turned up but far short of the targeted 50,000.

The rally, which began at 4pm, took place under heavy police presence. It featured several speeches by Pakatan's leaders as well as musical performances.

The issues brought up by the speakers included Bersih's demand for electoral reform, the presence of foreigners in the electoral roll as well as the listing of Felda Global Ventures Holdings.

The proposed construction of a high-rise project near Batu Caves and the Automated Enforcement System were also raised.

Opposition leaders present included Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang and PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang.

PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu, better known as Mat Sabu, who was the first senior leader to address the crowd at about 10pm, said similar peaceful assemblies would be held nationwide and culminate with a mammoth gathering in Kuala Lumpur in January.

Lim, who took the rostrum later, said Pakatan was bent on changing the Government.

Earlier, the head of a coalition of 15 non-governmental organisations which had opposed the rally, Mejar (Rtd) Razali Zakaria, said the group had decided against meeting the organisers of the rally to ask them not to proceed with the event.

"Since we did not seek police permission to take our members there, we decided against meeting the organisers.

"If any untoward incident happens there, we hope no one will accuse us of being responsible," he added.

On Thursday, Razali had said that the group would do whatever within its means to ensure the rally was not held there.
