Expo showcases NGOs and their social activities

Posted: 17 Nov 2012 05:57 AM PST

JOHOR BARU: An inaugural exposition to highlight the activities of various non-governmental organisations (NGOs) was held here last weekend.

The three-day Non-Profit Charity Organisation Expo 2012 was the brainchild of Joshua Ng, 38, who saw the need to increase the awareness of the public about the different types of welfare services available.

Ng, who was one of the recipients of the '10 Outstanding Young Malaysian Awards' in 2010, is the executive director and founder of Scope, an acronym for Social Care Organisation for Partnership Engagement.

"The objective of this expo is to provide an effective channel and source of information for people who needed help.

"As an example, a person who needs counseling can contact Sempurna Community Services, and those who require further help can be referred to drug rehabilitation centres," he said.

Senator Khoo Soo Seang, who was the guest of honour at the opening ceremony, said he was encouraged by Ng's efforts to showcase the various types of welfare services by the NGOs.

"Members of the public need to know how they can contact various NGOs and an expo like this will aid them to understand the different organisations and their causes," he said.

He added that there was also a need to raise awareness and recognition of society towards charitable oraganisations.

About 30 organisations showcased their welfare services for various target groups such as senior citizens, youth, the handicapped, and children from underprivileged homes as well as children with special needs.

Organisations that specialises in helping people with various disabilities such as the Cheshire Home Johor and the Persatuan Orang Pekak Johor also participated in the event.

KOTA KINABALU: The city police is on track to achieve its vision of turning the state capital into the safest in the country.

City police chief Assistant Commissioner Jauteh Dikun said his team of senior officers would be leading police force to bring about changes in the city's security.

"With community engagement activities and programmes planned all year round, I am confident that the police is moving on the right track in ensuring Kota Kinabalu as the safest city in Malaysia," he said at an annual assembly here, recently.

ACP Jauteh added confidence and cooperation from the community towards the police force was extremely vital for this purpose.

The police, he cited, is the pillar of society where all staff and officers must be disciplined and have a good sense of responsibility.

"A personnel's dependency on their superior's supervision has to be reduced, but at the same time, the officers also need to be proactive in meeting the community's expectations," he advised.

ACP Jauteh had urged all his personnel to be physically and mentally ready to face the challenges ahead and continue to improve their work performances to ensure that the aim of becoming the best contingent in safeguarding the town can be achieved.

Tour agent ordered to refund

Posted: 17 Nov 2012 05:57 AM PST

JOHOR BARU: A tour agency was ordered to refund a total of RM64,500 to a group of 14 undergraduate students from a local university here after their trip to the United Kingdom was cancelled.

The Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) students and a lecturer were scheduled to visit University of Bristol in July as part of the university's global outreach programme.

Lecturer Norazah Basar, 34, said the total amount quoted by the tour agency was about RM130,500 for both flight tickets and ground arrangements for the 10-day trip.

"The agency's marketing manager and owner, who dealt with us, told us that the price for the flight tickets and ground arrangements were quoted separately.

"So we paid in full for the flight tickets, which was RM49,700 by May 2, which was about two months before the departure date as required in the quotation," she said when met at the Consumer Claims Tribunal here recently.

However, Norazah added that the date to settle the remaining payment of the ground arrangements, which included accommodation and transport fee was not stated specifically.

"There were some minor complications on our part for the payment so I asked the agency's owners for an extension of deadline and she agreed to let us make our final payment by June 11," she said.

The Science Faculty lecturer also said they did not receive their flight tickets even after making the full payment for them.

Norazah added that she was shocked to receive an email on June 8 from the company's marketing manager saying that the trip had been cancelled due to delay in payment.

"That is unfair as we had already prepared cheques to be cashed in on June 11 and it was very disappointing when we were informed that the trip was cancelled," she said.

During the tribunal hearing, the agency's owner who only wanted to be known as Hizaz, said she was in the dark about the manager's decision to cancel the trip.

Tribunal president Maznah Haron chided both Hizaz and her employee saying that the miscommunication had caused a lot of complications for the students and ordered them to refund the amount within 14 days.

After hearing the judgement, the 14 students, who were present at the hearing, hugged each other and some even shed tears of joy.
