UNIVERSAL Fitness and Leisure Sdn Bhd (UFL) will be the main sponsor for the KL Muay Thai Challenge – Clash of Champions to be held at Stadium Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur this weekend.

It will be the second time UFL is sponsoring the event since the challenge's inception in 2011.

"Muay Thai or tomoi as it is referred to locally has had a growing following over the past years.

"It is through events such as this that we can develop this combat sport from the grassroot level up," UFL Sdn Bhd executive director Datuk Abdul Malek Mohamed Noor told a press conference at Wisma UFL, Taman Perindustrian KIP in Bandar Sri Damansara, Petaling Jaya recently.

He said UFL would be offering more this year by sponsoring FBT equipment amounting to RM50,000, including rope covers for the ring and angle ring protectors in addition to apparel such as gloves, shorts and T-shirts.

"FBT is the perfect brand for this challenge, because like Muay Thai, FBT has its origins in Thailand as well.

"Although more popularly known for its association with the sport of football in Thailand, FBT is slowly shifting its focus towards the Muay Thai market as the popularity of the sport grows," Malek Noor added.

Meanwhile, Muay Thai Malaysia Association president Datuk Muhammad Shahnas Azmi said the event was expected to attract 4,000 spectators per night.

"We received good response from last year's event and with the closure of the Clash of the Champions this time, it will be better.

"We have managed to produce talented athletes in Muay Thai such as Tengku Sharizal Tengku Abdul Rahman and Faizal Ramli through such events and it would be an opportunity for other young talents to show their skills during the challenge," Muhammad Shahnas said, adding that the association hopes to bag at least one gold medal for next year's Sea Games in Myanmar.

He said the National Sports Council had also approved 20 Muay Thai athletes to be trained at its newly built 12,000sq ft gym from January onwards.

"We will be engaging an international instructor from Thailand, including two local coaches to train the athletes," he said, adding that the sport would also be introduced in next year's Malaysia Games in the under 21 category.

Tickets for the KL Muay Thai Challenge are available via their Facebook page and at the ticket counters at Stadium Titiwangsa.
