British Olympic medallist pondering his future in sunny South-East Asia Posted: 20 Nov 2012 04:31 AM PST A well-deserved break from training and accomplishing good results in competitions served as a refreshing change for double Olympic swimming medallist David Davies from Britain. Davies said it was great to soak up the friendly local hospitality of different cultures as well as visiting places of interest during his recent outing to the South-East Asia region including Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur. "It has been tough to be totally committed to perform at high level in swimming. "It is mentally challenging to concentrate at maintaining the sound techniques and keeping up with the pace in training every day. "It is part and parcel of the job to carry on even I was not feeling at my best on certain days," he added. In his debut at the Athens Olympics in 2004, Davies picked up the bronze medal in the men's 1,500m freestyle. He went one place higher on the podium when he obtained silver in the men's 10km open water swim at the Beijing Games in 2008. In his third appearance at the London Olympics, Davies did not progress beyond his heat in the men's 1,500m freestyle. Davies said it was satisfying to be part of three consecutive Olympic Games. "Each was special in a different way. It was a wonderful experience to return with a bronze medal at a young age from Athens. We had the exceptional crowd support from families and friends in London. They were very loud in creating the electrifying atmosphere. "It is rare to make it to three Olympics. I am considering whether I should stay on and go through another four-year cycle for next Games (at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2016) but it is unlikely that I will do it. I will make a decision on that very soon," he added. Another major highlight of his competitive career was bagging the gold medal in the men's 1,500m freestyle as well as a bronze from the men's 400m freestyle at Melbourne Commonwealth Games in 2006. Recently, the 27-year-old Welshman conducted two separate training sessions for the Alice Smith School Torpedoes swim team during his brief visit to Kuala Lumpur. The renowned long-distance freestyle swimming icon turned up to inspire the secondary school students at the campus in Equine Park, Seri Kembangan followed by another session at the primary school campus in Jalan Bellamy, Kuala Lumpur. A total of 30 secondary school students went through the paces under his care while another 50 primary school pupils also received the similar privilege to rub shoulders with him. Davies said it was a rewarding stint to share his experiences with the youngsters because the eager learners were also good at following instructions. "They are very fortunate because they have the excellent training facilities within a school set-up. It is important to encourage them to acquire the strong fundamental techniques. "They are definitely showing the desire and hunger to improve but they will need to develop the good habits. "They will need to get it right at the start because applying the correct basic skills is still crucial at the elite level," he added. Montpelier Malaysia sponsored Davies' recent trip to Malaysia. Earlier, Davies also performed the similar role in spreading the same message in guiding the budding swimmers to scale greater heights in Bangkok. |
