Dr Selahuddeen: Breast cancer can be treated and cured at early stage

Posted: 30 Oct 2012 04:21 PM PDT

MUAR: Every woman should go for early breast cancer detection check as the illness, the number one killer of women, can be treated and cured at early stage.

Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital director Dr Selahuddeen Abdul Aziz said breast cancer was not like other cancer which could not be healed.

Speaking to women in Bukit Pasir here he said it was important for women at all ages to go for early detection for lumps on their breast before it was too late.

"We at the hospital received about 150 new cases of patients with breast cancer every year and sad to say all came after the cancer growth has become serious.

"If the cancer was detected at the early stage the patients can be treated and cured," he said at an awareness campaign for women to go for early detection for breast cancer yesterday.

Dr Selahuddeen said women could also do the breast self examination on their own and feel for lumps on the breast, adding that, they should seek medical advises if they found any.

He said besides lumps, they should also check for any discharge from the nipples as it too could be the cause of early cancer and urged them not to take things easy.

He said they should do the breast self examination once every month after their menstrual period and it only needed five minutes to check their breasts.

On the campaign, which was organised by the hospitals visitor board members and Wanita MIC Pagoh, Dr Selahuddeen said more such campaigns should be carried out.

Meanwhile, Pagoh Barisan Nasional division deputy chairman Datuk Tahir Taat commended Wanita MIC and the hospitals visitor board members for organising the campaign.

He said besides talks given by specialist doctors on breast cancers, the hospital also sent teams to conduct checks on participating women.

He said Malaysia would become a developed nation in 2020 and it was important that everyone, including the women folks, to be healthy.

"The country spend billions of ringgit every year to improve our living standard and we should make efforts to look after our health.

"We should also control our diet as many of todays killer diseases are caused by our eating habits", he said when launching the campaign.

Successful MCA mega dinner event draws thousands

Posted: 30 Oct 2012 06:36 PM PDT

SCORES of people packed the field in Foon Yew High School under a brighltly moonlit night in Kulai to attend the MCA mega dinner.

An earlier downpour did not stop some 15,000 people from arriving in time for the event that was scheduled to start 7.30pm.

Many arrived as early as 6pm to beat the evening rush hour traffic jam.

MCA President Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek arrived an hour earlier and headed straight to the field to make sure the dinner preparations were in order.

Addressing the mammoth crowd later, Dr Chua thanked them for finding time to attend the event themed 'Stability Above Chaos'.

"Your presence and support have made the event a success," he said.

Dr Chua, also Johor MCA chairman, went on to explain on the need to share with them the situation in the country in the run-up to the general election.

"Since the last elections four and half years ago, any issue that concerned the Chinese community has been politicised along the racial and religious line.

"The people must not take the country's stability and racial harmony for granted," he said, pointing out that the country would not be able to progress without that.

While the people reserved the right to decide on the Government, Dr Chua advised them to consider and compare the performance of Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Rakyat before making a decision.

"The Barisan Government may not be perfect but it has the track record of steering the nation forward since Independence," he noted.

Fast track to the present Government. Dr Chua said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had put in place the Economic Transformation Programme to develop Malaysia into a high income and developed nation by 2020.

He said this was a stark contrast to Pakatan which was only keen to grab power at all cost.

The Pakatan, he added, had not been able come up with an economic model for the country.

Citing Pakatan-ruled Penang as an example, he said its boastful Chief Minister had not been able to come up with a short or long term planning for the state.

In fact, Lim Guan Eng had resorted to manipulating accounting figures to look good, he added.

On religion, Dr Chua said the DAP's tactic was to confuse the non-Muslims with rhetorics, hoping that they believe PAS' brand of hudud would not affect them.

He said PAS, being the dominant partner in Pakatan was bent to implement its hudud if and when the coalition makes it to Putrajaya.

"If that happens, there will be serious and far-reaching socio-economic repercussions in the country," he added.

For instance, foreigners would have reservations in investing in Malaysia, and the stock market was expected to plunge at least 500 points, Dr Chua said.

"Malaysia is now the fifth most favoured foreign direct investment destination in Asia and this is a sign of investors' confidence in the Government," he added.

Dr Chua, who is a member of the National Economic Council chaired by the Prime Minister, said Malaysia's economic development had won worldwide recognition.

The Financial Times had described the country's economic growth as gravity defying growth, he said.

Of the RM500,000 proceeds from the dinner, RM300,000 were donated to Foon Yew High School and the balance went to Southern College.

Other party leaders who spoke at the dinner included Labis MP Datuk Chua Tee Yong and Gelang Patah MCA division chief Jason Teoh.
