PEKAN: Residents in the Pekan parliamentary constituency received sponsorship for 364 cows from several individuals and companies to be slaughtered in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidiladha celebrations this year.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the number of cattle was the highest to be given out to the needy recipients so far.

"I would like to thank all parties who have contributed for the benefit of the needy.

"As Muslims, we should be grateful, appreciate and practice the true meaning of sacrifice in addition to upholding and protecting the teachings of Islam," he said in his brief speech.

Also present were Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob, state executive councillor Datuk Ishak Muhammad and all donors of the livestock.

Of the total, eight heads of cattle were donated personally by Najib.

A total of 57 mosques, 154 surau and 30 government and private offices stood to receive the sacrificial meat.

Najib said the practice to render assistance to the needy groups was strictly based on the fundamental teachings of Islam.

"We are not talking rhetoric or slogans," he said, citing another example of the pivotal role played by Malaysia to resolve the longstanding conflict in the Southern Phillippines.

He also handed over Class B2 licences to probationary riders and spectacles to recipients under the Bantuan Lesen 1Malaysia and Jom Check Mata 1Malaysia programmes.

The Bantuan Lesen 1Malaysia initiative saw 234 people being given a probation licence under the initiative of a non-governmental organisation — Sekretariat Hal Ehwal Bandar — with the co-operation of Kelab Anak Wawasan Pekan Pahang and Road Transport Department.

The pioneer programme launched in Pekan in May was aimed to assist those who were caught for violating traffic offences in the past or from poor family background to obtain a valid licence to ride on the road.

Under the eye check-up programme conducted by undergraduates of Universiti Teknologi Mara, Puncak Alam branch,

431 out of some 1,000 Pekan residents were given a pair of spectacles.

"This is a good initiative and hopefully, be extended to other parts of the country in stages," Najib added.

MENTAKAB: The pioneer distinguished youth achievement programme here attracted the participation of 120 students from several secondary schools and private colleges.

The participants, aged between 14 and 25, were required to spend three nights away from their homes while carrying community-related activities together throughout the period.

Among others, they were required to perform gotong-royong, social service and entertain residents of welfare homes.

Mentakab assemblyman Datuk Chuah Boon Seong, who was present to join the group, said the initiative was very meaningful and beneficial to the students.

"This programme should be made an annual affair to benefit more students and youths.

"It could teach the participants good noble values and get them to know the society better," he said.

Chuah said the event organised by two youth associations was endorsed by the Youth and Sports Ministry under the Rakan Muda programme.

He said participants would have an added advantage when applying to enter universities after completing their secondary education.

"I urge all students to find time to take part in such programmes to realise the Government's aim to build a caring and loving society.

"In addition, participants can make new friends and learn to be self-dependent, enhance confidence and ready to face challenges in life," he said.
