Ranau folks celebrate Cabbage Festival with splendid display Posted: 20 Oct 2012 05:31 AM PDT RANAU: Once a year, Ranau folks organise a Cabbage Festival in mid October which signifies the importance of the crop for their livelihood. Due to the fine weather and appropriate soil dampness, vegetables of all types mainly cabbages can grow well without too much attention needed in this part of rural Sabah. Farmer Laini Baranting, 58, of Kampung Kundasang Lama in Kundasang, Ranau, who was arranging her vegetables to be viewed, said such plants were easier to grow here as they get enough water and just the right amount of sunlight for its growth. "It is easy to grow cabbages here. Almost everyone can grow them because all that is needed is land, water and fertilizer," she explained. Laini who has seven children said everyone works together to set up their stalls or exhibition huts designed like small houses, which were mainly made from bamboo. This year's Cabbage Festival was also held the same time as the 26th International Climbathon, also in conjunction with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak's inaugural visit to Kundasang town in the Ranau district on Oct 13 and 14. More than 10 bamboo huts were set up, while fruits and vegetables were packed and arranged beautifully in the huts in the festival. Most of the products including white carrot, cabbages of various types and local tomatoes, were displayed and later sold at a price slightly cheaper than usual while visitors were entertained by local songs such as 'Jambatan Tamparuli', 'Tanak Kampung' (village boy) and 'Sayang Kinabalu'. Meanwhile, Sarimeh Paiman, 44, who was walking from stall to stall said people in Ranau depend mostly on farming to make a living. "Here most of us have our own lands and the easiest plants to grow apart from fruit trees are vegetables. "This tradition of holding a Cabbage Festival was started many years back because farmers wanted to exhibit their crops, and to attract more people to come here," she said. "We sell the vegetables, while those who have more than what they can eat and trade here will supply them to traders in the city such as in Kota Kinabalu," she added. |
