Junior badminton championship to take place next month

Posted: 30 Oct 2012 06:42 AM PDT

THE serious contenders from Penang are expected to extend their domination at the fourth Fleet-Hooi Yee Sport Junior Badminton Championships at the Sports Affairs' 15-court badminton hall in Taman Segar Perdana, Cheras from Nov 16 to 18.

Former national women's doubles and mixed doubles shuttler Chor Hooi Yee said the three-day meet has a been a regular feature in the year-end competition calendar for the promising talents based in the Klang Valley as well as youngsters from other states.

"The stronger northern competitors, including entries from Penang and Kedah, are adding excitement to the occasion," said Hooi Yee.

"In the past, visiting players from other states were potential candidates to impress the selectors for a spot at the national junior training set-up based in Bukit Jalil. It has been great in attracting a high quality field offering stiff competition in the tournament.

"Last year, the Penangites representing several different training centres, registered a fruitful outing and took home five titles. They will be out to repeat another respectable feat," she added.

Based on the overwhelming response with almost 500 competitors in the 12 categories last year, they are anticipating another encouraging turnout.

"So far, we have received 200 entries. We are confident that we will surpass the target of 300 participants.

"It is going to be another exhausting exercise with a big pool of players competing but we will still accommodate them. Our aim is to allow them to gain the experience and to gauge their strength and progress in the tournament," said Hooi Yee.

Leading up to the tournament, the trainees from Hooi Yee's training camp have competed in four tournaments this season.

Currently, they have between 100 and 150 students going through the paces under their training programme.

The combination of Tai Ming Nan-Koh Sian Hern finished as the boys' Under-12 runners-up while Ming Nan ended his campaign in the quarter-finals of the singles at the recent outing at Klang in July.

Hooi Yee said they would also be fielding about 20 shuttlers for the Kota Star Badminton Association junior meet at Alor Star, Kedah in December.

For the upcoming tournament, the boys will compete in both singles and doubles in four age-groups — Under-10, Under-12, Under-14 and Under-16 — while the girls will also feature in the singles of the four age-groups.

The two doubles categories for the girls are the Under-12 and Under-14.

Entry closes on Nov 9. Those interested in taking part, visit www.hooiyeesport.blogspot.com or call 019-301 9909.
