Jalan Sultan stakeholders repeat call for public consultation over MRT project

Posted: 24 Oct 2012 04:30 AM PDT

THE Preservation of Jalan Sultan Committee is demanding for a public consultation on the Jalan Sultan development.

They also want to see the social impact studies carried out on the said development.

The group's co-chairman, Stanley Yong, said he was disappointed that until today, nothing had been revealed about the project's social impact and MRT Corp had been silent about their request for a public consultation on the development.

"The Draft Kuala Lumpur Plan 2020 was released in 2008 with a public consultation done earlier,'' Yong said.

"This is the biggest infrastructure project by the Government.

"If you don't follow proper process, how are you going to convince the people that the Jalan Sultan alignment is the best and final alignment?'' asked Yong.

He argued that new developments in the area incorporated a high-rise tower and medium-rise buildings that required massive infrastructure to build.

"These are new things, hence we are requesting for an adequate master plan and the public's consultation as there have been major changes to the original plan,'' he said.

Judy Lam, one of the owners of Hotel Lok Ann in Jalan Sultan said the development plan for the area is continuously changing; hence it was not right for MRT Corp to ask stakeholders to sign any mutual agreements.

"The stakeholders — both owners and the public — have the right to know and see the changes, so if MRT Corp is sincere, they should talk to us,'' added Lam.

Committee members and Jalan Sultan business owners, who attended the meeting chaired by Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Ahmad Phesal Talib and MRT Corp chief executive officer Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid on Oct 12, said they were disappointed that their repeated calls for having a public consultation had been ignored.

Serdang police joins line dancers in Puchong

Posted: 24 Oct 2012 04:30 AM PDT

MORNING joggers at the Jalan BK5/13 park in Bandar Kinrara 5, Puchong, were greeted with a rare scene recently when more than 30 officers from the Serdang IPD joined the residents in a line-dancing session.

With energetic music blaring from loud speakers set up at the park's basketball court, the police officers tried to keep up with the line-dancers led by Jenny Chan, 65.

The 20 Selangor Police Family Association (Perkep) members that also joined the session had more luck — and more coordination — in following the steps.

Serdang OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Razak Elias, who walked to the park from the Serdang IPD with his officers, said that he saw the ladies line-dancing during one of his patrols.

"I thought it would be good to get my men to join them for the session to get to know the area and the residents better.

"We're also killing two birds with one stone by getting them to exercise and keep fit.

"Sometimes they get so caught up with work and don't have time to work out," said ACP Razak.

Chan said she taught about 40 residents five days a week at the park and they even had different coloured shirts for each day of the week to make members feel a sense of belonging in the group.

"It's quite an experience to have the police join us today.

"We got to know them better and this makes it easier for us to communicate with them in future," she said.

ACP Razak said that attempted break-ins were common in the Kinrara area and the alertness of residents have resulted in several foiled cases.

"The residents are also concerned about the presence of foreigners who rent houses and live in the area because they would be drinking and turning on loud music until late at night.

"We have also received complaints about local teens hanging out in the park at night," he said.

The Perkep members reciprocated with a poco-poco dance which the line-dancers and police officers also joined in, before everyone had their breakfast.
