'Rust and Bone' wins best film at London festival Posted: 21 Oct 2012 04:43 AM PDT LONDON: "Rust and Bone", Jacques Audiard's moving romance about a street fighter and a killer-whale trainer, was named best picture at the London Film Festival late Saturday. Organisers said the film, starring French Oscar winner Marion Cotillard as a whale trainer who has a catastrophic accident and Belgian actor Matthias Schoenaerts as her unlikely lover, was "full of heart, violence and love". French director Audiard, 60, also won best film at the festival in 2009 for his prison drama "A Prophet", and was nominated for the Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes Film Festival for "Rust and Bone". "Jacques Audiard has a unique handwriting, made up of music, montage, writing, photography, sound, visual design and acting," said playwright and director David Hare, the festival's jury president. "He is one of only a very small handful of film-makers in the world who has mastered, and can integrate, every element of the process to one purpose: making, in 'Rust and Bone', a film full of heart, violence and love." The jury also commended "After Lucia", Michel Franco's tale of bullying in a Mexican high school, and Chilean film "No", starring Gael Garcia Bernal, about how advertising contributed to the end of Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship. "Beasts of the Southern Wild", a fantasy set in an impoverished US bayou community, and "Mea Maxima Culpa", a documentary about the Catholic sex abuse scandal, also picked up prizes. British director Tim Burton and his partner, the actress Helena Bonham Carter, were awarded with fellowships to the British Film Institute for their "outstanding contribution to film culture". The 12-day festival, which closes on Sunday, has also seen the premiere of "Crossfire Hurricane", a documentary about the Rolling Stones's 50 years in rock and roll. - AFP |
Soo’s so busy with albums and PhD as well Posted: 20 Oct 2012 10:39 PM PDT KUALA LUMPUR: Cutting a Malay and Mandarin album while working on your PhD may sound a bit complicated but it's a cinch for actress and former beauty queen Soo Wincci. Her ambition to crack the Taiwan music market and, at the same time maintain her presence on the local scene and pursue a doctorate in business administration may appear like a difficult juggling act. But the 26-year-old Soo said she was determined to make it all work with some "sacrifices." The Miss World Malaysia 2008 winner, who was recently seen in the much-acclaimed Celebrity Master Chef reality show, said she was elated when a song from her yet-to-be-released Mandarin album was chosen as the theme song for an upcoming Taiwanese drama series. "I will be releasing the Mandarin album soon, now that one of my songs has been chosen for the drama series," she told mStar, the Malay news portal of The Star. Soo said that after three years in the local arts scene, she was ready to venture into the Taiwanese market but this did not mean she would forsake the local entertainment industry. "I am ready to build a name in Taiwan but I also aim to further broaden my following on the local scene. "At the same time, I am completing a thesis for my PhD programme in business administration at the Open University Malaysia (OUM)," she said. With a law degree and a Master's in business administration, she received a scholarship from the OUM in 2010 to do her doctorate, which she expects to complete by 2014. On the "sacrifices" she has to make, Soo said she had to do with little rest in her daily routine and stay away from any romantic relattionship that could throw her off balance. "With my growing career and a PhD to work on, I have to stay focused. Sometimes I only get two hours of sleep a day. "My ex-boyfriend broke up with me last year as he could not accept my lifestyle, and I definitely do not have time for any romantic relationship at the moment," she said. Meantime, Soo's mini-Malay album was released last month, with four songs, including Nombor 1, Jangan Risau and Musim Asmara. Another song, Terus Teranglah, features local hip-hop star Joe Flizzow. |
