Vintage bicycle record-breaking feat Posted: 26 Sep 2012 06:32 PM PDT SOME 426 vintage bicycle enthusiasts dressed up as characters from yesteryear converged at Mydin MITC in Ayer Keroh, Malacca, to showcase their rides. A 200-metre stretch of the main road entering the hypermarket was packed with the classic bicycles — setting a new record for the largest gathering of old cycles in Malaysia Book of Record. The mass gathering of vintage bicycles was officiated by state legislative assembly speaker Datuk Wira Othman Muhammad with Mydin's managing director Datuk Dr Ameer Ali Mydin in attendance. "I am proud to be invited to witness a large congregation of classic bicycles," said Othman, at the event which was jointly organised by Batu Berendam Classical Bicycle Association and Mydin. Among the exhibits were utility, service and military bicycles that were more than a century old. The hypermart's manager R Apparavoo said he did not expect a huge turnout of vintage bicycle owners at the event. "They came with zeal to display their collections which is not only a captivating sight for locals, but also visitors from neighbouring states, especially the younger generation." Vintage bicycles that were abundant in the early days of Malaya ranged from manufacturers like Raleigh, Hercules, Robinhood, Phillips, BSA, Sunbeam, Triumph, Hudson and Rudge. Some 20 classic bicycle associations from Muar, Klang, Kota Tinggi and Johor Baru were involved in the gathering to commemorate Malaysia Day. One of the participants, Zain Omar from the Army's firefighting unit became the talk of town with his vintage fireman's bike. He said the special British-made bicycle was used in the 1880's. "I spend a fortune to refurbish the old bike which was purchased from an antique dealer, few years ago. "The fire-fighting equipment which was mounted on the bike were sourced from various antique collectors domestic and foreign." Zain, a fireman at the Terendak Army Camp said his network of friends had led him to source for vintage firefighting equipment from England. Two other cycling enthusiasts, Sak Abu Ali, 58 and Yakno Yapani, 35, from Batu Berendam had turned up in vintage police uniforms during the gathering. Sak Abu said their uniforms were custom made while the rank insignias and service badges were ordered through the Internet. |
Police bust illegal online gambling ring in Mentakab Posted: 26 Sep 2012 06:35 PM PDT TEMERLOH: Police had carried out a major swoop on illegal cyber cafes around Mentakab's town area and closed down eight of such outlets over one week. Acting district OCPD Supt Zundin Mahmood said during the operations some 98 computers, modems and cash worth RM30,000 were confiscated. "We detained 21 people including eight caretakers, aged between 18 and 66. "All were released on police bail after having their statements recorded," he said, adding that the success was due to public information and surveillance. Supt Zundin said initial investigations showed that all the outlets were operating illegally and offered gambling activities under the guise of cyber cafes. The outlets, he added, were equipped with closed-circuit cameras and alarm systems to warn the patrons on the presence of authorities. "We have opened investigations under Section 4B (a) of the Common House Gambling Act and Section 4(1) (b) of the Entertainment Enactment 1993. "Once investigations are completed, we will forward the cases to the Deputy Public Prosecutor to seek consent and press charges," he said. Upon conviction, the offence carries a minimum fine of RM10,000 for each machine seized or up to five years in prison. On the matter, Supt Zundin also praised the public for giving information to the police to curb vice in the district. He said police viewed such illegal activities seriously and would take stern action on the offenders. "If left unchecked, it would lead to moral decay and other social ills in the society. " |
Paip told to expedite completion of project Posted: 26 Sep 2012 03:51 PM PDT KUANTAN: A faulty water pump had caused service disruption to various parts of town recently. Water supply in the affected area was restored recently after repairs were made on a faulty pump. Teruntum assemblyman Chang Hong Seong said Pengurusan Air Pahang Berhad (Paip) had fixed faulty equipment at Kampung Kobat. Areas like the Semambu industrial area, he added, was severly affected by the disruption. Chang said the source of the problem was a system overload in the pump station's switchboard after a rat had chewed through it. The crisis had left most neighbourhoods in Kuantan without water supply for four days. "To deal with this problem in the future, the state has asked Paip to expedite the completion of another four new pumps at Kampung Kobat which will resolve all water supply problems if any of the pumps malfunctioned," said Chang. He added that the project is expected to be completed by early next yearand the existing seven old pumps would become back-up for the whole of Kuantan. |
