Malaysians should adopt a healthy lifestyle by exercising regularly

BENTONG: Millions of ringgit can be saved yearly if the people adopt a healthy lifestyle by exercising regularly and eating moderately.

State Health, Local Government and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Hoh Khai Mun said the Government had to increase its allocation for healthcare every year as more people were suffering from chronic ailments.

Hoh said some of the ailments such as heart problems, hypertension, diabetes, renal failure and obesity were preventable as it was related to lifestyle and eating habits.

"Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lairequested for an additional 10% in the upcoming Budget for next year to provide better healthcare services to the people.

"Statistics show that more people are developing symptoms of chronic ailments which require treatment and medications, resulting in higher costs for the Government," he said after opening a health campaign organised by Bentong Hospital in Dataran Bentong here.

Some 1,000 people from all walks of life participated including health personnel, civil servants, students and the public.

Citing an example, Hoh said the cost for one renal failure patient amounted to RM1,300 a month, including health checks and haemodialysis treatments.

He said patients suffering from heart ailments, hypertension and diabetes needed a higher amount, as some of them are required to undergo operations.

"As such, healthcare services and treatments are pressing issues with no short-term solution in sight, due to more and more people developing lifestyle diseases.

"Two main problems are the shortage of doctors and specialists at government hospitals and a longer waiting time for patients to receive treatments," he said.

Hoh said the people could play a role to reduce chances of contracting lifestyle diseases by walking for a distance of 6.5km daily or at least thrice a week.

He said besides helping to reduce Government's expenditure, it could ensure a more productive, vibrant and healthy society.

MUAR: Police detained a suspected loan shark, 15 minutes after he slashed a man who failed to pay his RM2,000 loan taken last year.

Muar police chief Asst. Comm Mohammed Nasir Ramli said the suspect, aged 34, was arrested after he attacked a trader, aged 25, along Jalan Sungai Abong recently.

Speaking to reporters, he said the suspect, who drove a car, had trailed the trader, who was also driving a car and blocked the traders car at about 3pm.

The trader saw the suspect rushing towards him with a machete and decided run away. However, the suspect managed to catch the trader and slashed him on the right hand before a police patrol unit arrived.

ACP Mohammed Nasir said the trader suffered a three-in cut on the right arm but managed to drive to the Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital for treatment. He said the suspect had tried to run when he saw a police multi-purpose vehicle but did not get far and police also seized the machete used to attack the trader.

He said initial investigation showed the reason for the attack was over a loan of RM2,000 which the trader took about one year ago but failed to repay.

ACP Mohammed Nasir also said police detained two friends, aged 21 and 16, believed to be involved in motorcycle thefts and selling of spare parts here. He said they were arrested at about 1.30am on Aug 28 following a tip-off and police also seized two motorcycles and many motorcycle components at the back of a house in Kampung Parit Punggur.

He said the house belonged to the 16 year-old youth, who teamed up with the 21-year-old friend to steal and cannibalise motorcycle parts for sale.

He said police also believed they were involved in illegal racing activities and most of the engine blocks found at the house had their chassis numbers tampered.

In another case, ACP Mohammed Nasir said three students and a stall helper, aged between 15 and 23, were arrested for breaking into a school in Parit Yusof in May.

He said the group stole a laptop computer and RM70 cash when they broke into the school office and stole a motorcycle which was parked behind the school building.

"We arrested them in Jalan Bakau Chondong in Batu Pahat on Sept 3 and investigation showed it was the first time they broke the law. We will charge them all in the court soon", he added.

JOHOR BARU: The 24 Festive Drums will be returning to its founding place in Johor Baru tomorrow for the second international 24 Festive Drums show and national competition after it was discovered here 24 years ago.

One of its co-founders Tan Chai Puan, 59, said that he and another co-founder Tan Hooi Song, who passed away in 2008, first dabbled on the idea of beating a few Chinese drums together instead of just the usual solo drum in 1988.

Tan said that during that time, both of them were in the organising committee for a dance festival's opening ceremony when they came up with the idea.

"We decided to form a formation of nine drums beating together to coincide with the festival's ninth anniversary and the performance received good response from the audience," he told Star Metro here.

Tan added that they decided to add more drums to make it 24 to signify the 24 solar terms in ancient China's agricultural calendar.

He said that the calendar reflects the change of seasons and divides the climate into Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.

Tan said that the art quickly passed on after Foon Yew High School formed the first ever 24 Festive Drums team and the drumming art is now practised all over the world in Singapore, Taiwan, China, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Meanwhile, the drum show, held once every two years, promises spectators an exciting and upbeat show for the eyes and ears.

Event organiser Johor Baru Tiong Hua Association's manager Eric Ku said that the audience could expect to see different styles of drum beating and stories conveyed to them through the performances by teams from over Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, China, the United Kingdom and the United States.

"The defending champions Foon Yew High School from Johor Baru will be back to defend their title in the national-level competition against strong contenders from Penang, Kuala Lumpur, Sabah and Sarawak," he said.

Ku added that on top of the top three spots, the teams stand a chance to win four other prizes, which are Best Creation, Best Formation, Best Costume and Best Rhythm awards.

The event kicks off at 7.30pm on Sept 15 at the MBJB Indoor Stadium this Saturday and tickets are priced at RM10 per person.
