Perting falls a place for adventure and picnic lovers

Posted: 31 Aug 2012 08:41 PM PDT

BENTONG'S Perting falls is worth a visit if you have a penchant for adventure.

Located about 9km from town, the Perting valley in Pahang is also a well-known destination for corporate training as there are a few team building operators with accommodation facilities in the area.

On weekends, Sungai Perting also becomes a preferred picnic area for families.

A hike from the trail head towards the waterfalls would take about 50 minutes covering a distance of 3.5 kilometres.

There is also remnants of an old logging trail where you can see rusted pipelines and eroded concrete drainage which were meant for keeping the old laterite road from overflowing with water during the rainy season.

At the end of the hike, there is steep drop leading to a waterfall pool.

Hikers who frequent the path had also fastened the slope with ropes for safety and a smooth decent.

So, if you plan to visit the falls, be sure to wear proper shoes with a good grip as the drop can be very slippery.

For those who prefer to camp, there are two suitable campsites in the area.

The best time to visit Perting (GPS N 03 27.41', E 101 51.85') is during the dry season from March to June.

What a load of rubbish

Mayor chides residents and food operators irresponsible acts of dumping waste in septic tanks and drains

JOHOR BARU: Used sanitary pads, towels, rags and diapers – these are the typical items found by contractors unclogging septic tanks in residential areas.

Rubbish in septic tanks, pieces of wood and construction debris are the norm and were the main reasons for the tanks to clog.

Johor Baru mayor Burhan Amin said the unsightly junk were removed by the city's contractors while repairing damaged tanks recently in Taman Tampoi Utama and Taman Megah Ria.

"The residents are responsibile for properly disposal of their rubbish.

"But its otherwise and they blamed the council for not doing our job when the septic tanks become stuck," he said at the MBJB's full board meeting here recently.

The onus is on the residents but they took the easy way out by dumping rubbisy down the drain or toilets resulting in high maintenance costs to repair the damage.

Burhan added that restaurant and food outlet operators who dumped cooking oil down the drain are also to be blamed for clogging the city's drainage system.

"I urge these food operators to install grease traps to prevent such problems from occurring in future," he added.

On a separate matter, Burhan said in 2011, the council received a total of 6,164 public complaints on road works, facilities and drainage maintenance, followed by traffic lights and street lamps repair works.

Of the lot, some 97% of the complaints were solved while the remaining issues are still pending work and completion.

TEMERLOH: Undergraduates are encouraged to participate in an online competition in conjunction with the Merdeka celebrations to show their patriotism to the country.

Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah said the initiative was mooted in line with the trend to use social media to interact and communicate as well as to instill a sense of belonging and love for the nation.

"So far, the response has been very encouraging due to the week-long festive holidays.

"We expect more entries to be submitted before the deadline on Sept 12," he said during his open house in Taman Tualang Indah here.

Saifuddin, who is also Temerloh MP, said participants could choose to enter any of the three categories namely completing a slogan, create a picture with the theme of patriotism and produce a short video on the meaning of independence.

Contents of the production, he added, must not offend any parties, respect the diversities and sensitivities of all Malaysians.

"Any work which is deemed to have insult or create a bad taste against any individual would be automatically disqualified.

"All entries must be submitted before the deadline," he said.

The winners would be announced on Sept 15 at the Sepetang Bersama Siswa Merdeka programme at the Saloma Bistro in Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur.

Saifuddin said among the attractive prizes up for grabs include iPad, digital camera and iPhone.
