KK City Hall to look into public grouses aired during public dialogues Posted: 27 Dec 2011 02:44 PM PST KOTA KINABALU: Sewerage and missing manhole covers are among the top complaints received from city dwellers during a recent meet-the-client session by the Kota Kinabalu City Hall. Mayor Datuk Abidin Madingkir said people also complained of public amenities and water issues, pointing out these problems were under the jurisdiction of the Public Works Department and state Water Department. City Hall received a total 7,126 of complaints on various issues so far this year, Abidin said, adding most of the grouses were channeled through the public sessions. "The purpose of having these sessions are to enhance relations with the public and enable them to give ideas on how we could improve our services," he said. He said the public has several avenues to express their thoughts on city-related issues including cleanliness and security through City Hall's hotline through the newspapers. "We will look into all the public complaints and suggestions provided they are constructive," he said. Abidin has established a special unit called the Flying Squad to closely monitor problems in the city. Full content generated by Get Full RSS. |
Massive clean up in flood prone areas Posted: 27 Dec 2011 05:43 PM PST KUANTAN: Alam Flora Sdn Bhd has launched an intensive flood mitigation campaign to clean out the drainage system in town. Its chief executive officer Mohd Zain Hassan said to that end, two pump vehicles had been deployed from the headquarters to clear out debris, rubbish and mud clogging the drainage pipes. The effort will be continuous and concentrated in areas prone to flash floods. So far, we have cleaned the drains at Jalan Darat Makbar, LorongSetali, Jalan Pasar, Jalan Teluk Sisek, Bukit Sekilau and Jalan Mahkota,he said at the launch of the campaign here recently. Mohd Zain said two teams would also be on patrol around town if there is heavy rain occurring. During emergencies, more units will also be deployed from their normal duties to help out, he said. Mohd Zain added that flash flood mostly happened due to uncontrolled waste disposal. The drains are usually clogged from coagulated oil underneath restaurants. Sometimes we can even find construction materials that have been tossed into the drain, he said. Teruntum assemblyman Chang Hong Seong who launched the campaign, said long and short-term measures must be in place to ensure flooding in the town is reduced. "It is not only Alam Flora and the Kuantan Municipal Councils job to maintain the environment but the public must also be made aware of theconsequences of throwing garbage down the drain", he said. Chang said the public could contact the Solid Waste and Public Sanitary Management Corporation at its hotline at 1800-88-7472 for garbage, drainage and overgrown grass complaints. Poor students receive school aid Posted: 27 Dec 2011 05:35 PM PST JOHOR BARU: While others prefer to have branded shoes and popular cartoon characters stationeries for school, S. Priety, 11, is content with receiving a simple school bag to prepare her for the new school year. The SJKT Ladang Kulai Besar student said that the aid could help lift her parents' burden. "My parents cannot afford to buy me fancy sneakers or Barbie doll school bags that I like as we come from a low income family. "The items really mean a lot to me as I have been using my elder siblings' hand-me-downs," she said. She was among 72 students from poor families who received school aids at the Kulaijaya Ikram Malaysia's Back To School programme here recently. Another recipient SJKC Saleng student Dorine Shelvic, 11, was all smiles and said that she felt motivated to begin the school year after receiving the bag as well as school attire. "I am excited to show off my new bag to my classmates and wear the new uniform to school," she said. SMK Pendidikan Khas Vokasional Indahpura student Izzat Rashid, 19, hoped that the items could also bring him luck, as he would be sitting for his SPM examinations next year. "Such aids are a good motivation for students from poor families to work hard for their studies," he said. Meanwhile, Kulaijaya district Ikram Malaysia member Hamida Musa said that the aids were distributed to students from seven schools in the district. "Other than helping them, we also wanted to show them that we are concerned about their needs," she said. Full content generated by Get Full RSS. |
