A charitable Christmas

Posted: 21 Dec 2011 05:32 PM PST

MALACCA: Avillion Legacy Malacca celebrated the season of joy with a charitable effort for the less fortunate children in the city.

The prestigious hotel feted 60 children from three charity homes to a Christmas party at the hotel's impressive glass dome lobby, recently.

The event was organised as part of the hotel's corporate social responsibility as well as sharing the Yuletide spirit with the underprivileged children.

The party began with appearances by Santa Claus and Santarinas and distribution of candies to the delighted young ones, eliciting broad smiles on the children's faces.

While savouring the delicacies offered by the hotel, a quiz session was conducted while Christmas gifts were handed out.

Sathiya Murugiah,15, from Sri Ramakrishna Ashram Home said it was a great experience to dine at the hotel and was excited to perform an Indian classical dance.

The energetic children also won many presents during the various fun-filled games planned by the hotel's staff.

"I am very grateful that the less fortunate children are still loved and cared by the corporate organisation,"said Malacca's Calvary Care administrator Albert Peh.

The highlight of the event was when donations were presented to the three homes by hotel general manager Low Kee Nam.

Low said the hotel has created a bond with children and would continue to foster ties with other homes in the future.

Floods in Johor under control due to public awareness

Posted: 21 Dec 2011 05:27 PM PST

JOHOR BARU: The flood situation in the state is stable and is expected to improve with 2,868 people evacuated to 28 flood relief centres statewide.

Johor police chief Deputy Comm Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said Kluang remained the worst hit area with 2,147 people placed in 13 centres.

Other affected areas are Segamat with 234 evacuees, Batu Pahat (142), Pontian (129), Skudai (28) and Kota Tinggi (17).

The police have also stationed a police helicopter at the Kluang district police headquarters to assist with relief operations.

DCP Mohd Mokhtar said 11 marine police boats have been dispatched at districts affected by floods with seven more on standby at the marine police headquarters in Tampoi here.

"A total of 8,300 police officers and personnel will be deployed to the areas to aid in the rescue mission during the floods," he said to pressmen after attending the state police headquarters assembly on Wednesday.

Johor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Hamid Suari said so far no fatalities had been recorded, due to floods.

"This time around, people are more aware about floods because many of them started coming to flood relief centres early.

"We are currently conducting monitoring missions to see if there are any victims who have not moved out from their houses or are cut off due to the floods," he said.

State Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) director Chong Chee Han said the flood situation in the state has improved but cautioned those in flood prone areas to be alert.

He said the Meteorological Department had forecast heavy rainfall in the state until Thursday.

"However, it has not rained and the flood situation in several districts in the state has started to improve," he said.

Meanwhile in Batu Pahat, flood victim Sri Saripin, 81, and his family members were forced to move out after flood waters started rising to knee deep level several days ago.

"Our area was submerged in 1.5m of water," he said, adding that although he was sad all his belongings were destroyed, he was relieved his family members were safe.

A family from Ladang Simpang Kiri, Maehkah Samaea, 29, and her four children, were transported to a relief centre by a health clinic staff.

"My baby boy and I were supposed to go for a medical check up this morning, but the clinic staff came to our house at 10am instead wanting us to leave the house immediately as the water level in the river was rising fast," she said, adding that her husband, an auxiliary policeman was out on duty at that time.

Maehkah hoped to go home as soon as possible because it was inconvenient for her as she was still in confinement and breast-feeding her baby.

Village Development and Security committee chairman Kasbon Rahmat said more families would have to be evacuated if the rain continued.

All the victims are placed in five relief centers — Kampung Haji Kamisan in Labis, SK Taman Seri Kota in Yong Peng as well as SK Kota Dalam, SK Sri Pandan and SK Parit Kuari in Ayer Hitam.

School looking to raise funds

Posted: 21 Dec 2011 05:25 PM PST

SEGAMAT: SJK (C) Karas in Labis, located 35km from Segamat town, is looking to raise RM1.3mil to construct a new school building.

School board chairman Yee Soon Ming said so far, the school had received a total of RM390,000 donations from public as well as allocations from Labis MP Datuk Chua Tee Yong.

He said a new two-storey building with 12 classrooms would replace the current six classrooms, which were built in the 1960s.

A science lab, integrated living skill lab and staff room are other facilities planned.

"We hope to provide a conducive learning environment for the pupils," he said when met after a RM100,000 mock cheque presentation by Chua at Sungai Karas community hall, located next to the school recently.

Yee said plans were being drawn out and construction could commence as soon as enough funds had been raised.

"We have 150 pupils studying here, half of them are residents around Sungai Karas and the rest are from Labis town, about five km from here," he said.

Chua said an amount of RM100,000 was donated by an anonymous donor who had given RM200,000 to the school last month.

In a separate development, Chua said SJK (C) Labis's application for the morning school session instead of having two sessions had been approved.

"All students will attend the morning session when school opens on Jan 3," he told reporters after visiting the school.

Chua said the school received a notification of approval from the Education Ministry in a letter dated Dec 9.

"It is a good news for the people here as we have been waiting for this day for years," he said.

Chua also said the school received RM5mil of allocation from Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to build a new school block.

The school decided to convert its old library into four classrooms this year, using the allocation from the state government and Labis parliament as well as public donations.
