JASIN: Some 260,000 motorists have made adjustments to synchronise their driving licence expiry dates with their birthdays, said Road Transport Department (JPJ) deputy director-general Datuk Ismail Ahmad.

As of Dec 5, he said that a total of 158,467 motorists have come forward to make adjustments at post offices nationwide with the rest at JPJ offices at all states.

"Another 662 have opted to do so via online e-government services portal MyEG", he said after attending a joint operation at the Bemban rest area along the North-South Expressway here recently.

He said Johor have recorded 11,718 people, the highest number of motorists making the adjustment on their driving license, followed by Selangor (11,089) and Sarawak (9,808).

"Motorists, he added, need not rush as adjustments could be made during their next license renewal."

On another matter, Ismail has called on back seat passengers to instil the habit of buckling up as the ruling takes effect from Jan 1 next year.

He said many still take it for granted that failure to wear their seat belts would induce the risk of serious injuries and death by 50% in an accident.

"Our enforcement officers will be always on the lookout for offenders. We will not hesitate to issue the offender a non-discountable compound of RM300 if the passenger does not put on the seat belt", he said, adding enforcement officers would patrol on the road and at roadblocks checking on motorists and passengers all the time.

Meanwhile, he noted that 583 summons have been issued throughout the one-week Pre-Chinese New Year joint operation held by the department with 12 other agencies in Malacca.

He said the operation from Dec 1 to Dec 7 targeted all vehicles including public transport vehicles like express buses and tour buses.

"The department would conduct massive operations nationwide one week before and after Chinese New Year festive season to reduce accident rate", he added.

JOHOR BARU: The Inland Revenue Board (IRB) office was visited by thousands of applicants after they started distributing the forms for the RM500 one-off assistance here yesterday.

The one-off assitance was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak when tabling the 2012 Budget on Oct 7 and would be given to households with an income of RM3,000 and below.

Eager applicants had started queuing at the office along Jalan Padi Emas from 7am with crowds reaching the hundreds by 9am causing traffic congestion along the area.

Single mother Nur Farhashayraein Mohamed, 36, said that she had arrived at around 11pm and was thankful that she did not have to wait long to receive the form and register herself for the assistance.

"My husband and I recently separated and it has been a struggle to make ends meet," said the factory worker who explained that she was thankful to the government for thinking of the lower income group.

Another applicant, Wong Su Pen, 61, said that he had travelled about 40 minutes from Saleng in Senai to the IRB office as his son wanted to apply for the aid.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson from the IRB office said that they had more than 20 counters and 50 staff on standby to address the needs of the applicants.
