Contraband items reach RM19.79mil for the past year

MALACCA: The state Customs department had thwarted 75 smuggling cases at with contrabands worth RM19.79mil from the beginning of 2010 to November this year.

The department's director Datuk Mohd Nasir Said said most of the contraband were cigarettes, fireworks, vehicles and liquors.

"Cigarette smuggling topped the list with 37 cases while only three cases involved illegal vehicles mercantilism.

"Investigations revealed that the smuggling activities were carried out by syndicated members that have links with overseas rackets," he said at the destruction of seized contrabands at the Customs elimination site at Bukit Katil.

During the exercise, the department destroyed various brands of illicit cigarettes and liquors worth some RM4mil including duty and sales tax.

Mohd Nasir revealed that out of the 75 cases, tax evasions for cigarettes were RM18.35mil, RM39,663.03 for fireworks, RM862,182.87 (liquors) and vehicles amounted to RM181,145.

On the destruction of the seized contrabands, he said the department had gotten rid of various types of contrabands with unpaid tax worth RM11.43mil since January, this year.

Major galore at upcoming street food fest

JOHOR BARU: The 'Fabulous Food One Malaysia' Street Food Festival returns on Dec 3 - 4, offering a great opportunity for Malaysians and foreign visitors alike to savor and enjoy the many sumptuous local food.

The event's organizing committee chairman Yew Wern Chung said the festival had established a strong presence with support from many foreign visitors, especially those from Singapore.

"Based on the immigration records, a high number of visitors from Singapore and other countries came here during the festival period, reinforcing the state's reputation as a gourmet paradise for all walks of life," he added.

Tourism minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen is expected to attend the event's opening ceremony here in Taman Johor Jaya on Saturday.

Yew said that street food can truly represent the local food culture.

"With Malaysia's multi-ethnic and multi-cultural heritage and during the festival, visitors can navigate their way throughout the food maze to sample the signature flavors of this year's event including rendang, nasi beriyani and char kway teow."

The food festival is jointly organized by the Ministry of Tourism and the Federation of Malaysia Hawker Association.

In conjunction with the event, redemption vouchers worth RM5 each will be available on Saturday at the secretariat counter.

Visitors are required to bring 2 newspaper mastheads of The Star (November issues) as entitlement.

Voucher redemption is on a first-come-first-serve basis and each person is limited to one redemption only.

Card offers ‘low cost’ personal loan

KOTA KINABALU: The launch of MBF's personal loan product in Sabah will see a new market emerging and broader customer base for MBF Cards in the state.

MBF Cards Power Loan offers low cost affordability through its repayment options, which starts from as low as RM99 per month.

MBF Cards president Gan Kheng Chai said the product was a true 'low cost' personal loan that puts the 'power' in the hands of the consumers in terms of prudent financial management, hence, the name 'Power Loan'.

He said MBF Cards decided to look at the product proposition from a different angle since the value propositions of loans are built around three key areas namely, interest charges, the speediness of the approval as well the cash disbursement and the loan amount offered.

"Thus, we created a unique selling proposition that was based on a concept that has never been applied before, focusing on the borrower's repayment affordability," he said.

Gan said MBF Cards have long been in the forefront of the credit card industry in terms of launching innovative and first-of-a-kind products.

"With new demands and needs in the market to meet, we have accepted the challenge to go beyond the confinement of the card industry and have now ventured into personal loan which enables us to tap into a new market segment and expand our customer base," he said.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Dr Yee Moh Chai launched the product,

witnessed by Gan and MBf Holdings Berhad Group chief executive officer Tan Sri Dr Mogan Lourdernadrecently.

Gan said the MBF Cards Power Loan offers five other attractive monthly repayment options for different levels of customer affordability to suit their individual lifestyle needs.

Dr Mogan said the introduction of the Power Loan product by MBF Cards was one of the ways to assist in curbing the ascending demand for illegal moneylenders.

MBF Cards Power Loan is open to all Malaysians including non-MBF card members aged between 21 to 60 years old with a minimal monthly income of RM1,250 and above.

Under this product, cash loans from a minimum of RM2, 000 up to a maximum of RM30, 000 is offered at a flat interest rate of 9.89 per cent, one of the lowest in the market today, and there is no need for collaterals or guarantors.
