Marathons — half and full — are generating interest among people in Klang Valley

Posted: 31 Dec 2011 05:29 AM PST

THE return of the Petaling Jaya Half Marathon brought cheer to the running community in the Klang Valley.

The event, the first 21km run in the country, was last organised in 2007. But due to several reasons, the organisers — Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) and The Star — were unable to stage the event until this year.

And the PJ Half Marathon, offering a total cash purse of RM48,000 and also support from the sponsors, was held on a grand scale.

About 5,000 participants had gathered at the Petaling Jaya Stadium in Kelana Jaya for the event. MBPJ have expressed their interest to make the PJ Half Marathon as part of PJ's City Day celebrations.

Nestle Products sports marketing manager Ng Ping Loong said he was pleased with the return of the PJ Half Marathon.

"The event was a pioneer to road races in the country. It catered for the community in the Klang Valley. But now, with cash being offered to the top winners, the organisers should look into creating a new category for foreign participants.

"An international category will be ideal. Our local participants will benefit from this rule,'' said Ping Loong.

Foreigners, who come to Malaysia as tourists, are taking part in road races. The Immigration Department had declared that those coming to Malaysia as tourists are not eligible to take part in road races without work permits. But the organisers are flouting the immigration rule and allowing foreigners to take part in the road races.

It is certainly encouraging to see local authorities taking initiative to organise road races. The Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) organises Shah Alam 10km while the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) the SJ 10km Run. The other local councils Klang Municipal Council (MPK) and Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) also have running programmes.

The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) supports the Standard Chartered KL Marathon which has grown into a major international marathon in the region. The organisers offer cash prizes to the best Malaysians as well.

The Seremban Half Marathon (SHM) have a category for international participants and this has been well received by the local participants.

Surprisingly the same cannot be said on the local authorities contribution to hockey. The Petaling Jaya Hockey Stadium and the Pandamaran Hockey Stadium in Klang have been declared unfit. The MBPJ have agreed to re-turf the PJ Hockey Stadium but have yet to start work.

Despite this setback, the MBPJ have a junior development programme and also take part in the Malaysian Hockey League (MHL) and Malaysian Junior Hockey League (MJHL).

Both the MBPJ and MPK should have made plans to maintain the turf as it needed to be replaced after five years. It is hoped that the two turfs will be replaced soon.

The Football Association of Selangor (FAS) should also be praised for organising a league. Though it is not as competitive as in the 70s and 80s, the league has a strong following and attracted about 90 teams. This year, Emkay-NPNG became the Super Division and FA Cup champions.

On the schools scene, Selangor became the overall champions in the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) programme for the 10th season.

Another interesting event was this year's Malaysia Games. Until last year, when the games was held in Malacca, it was Sukan Malaysia or Sukma in short. But this year, the National Sports Council (NSC) opted for a re-branding exercise and decided to call it Malaysia Games.

Instead of staging the games every two years, the Malaysia Games became an annual affair —one year to be hosted by the NSC and the next by a state.

This year's Malaysia Games was organised by the NSC in the Klang Valley while the 2012 Games will be hosted by Pahang.

And we can expect some new stars to surface in the Malaysia Games.
