Storm wreaks havoc

Posted: 06 Dec 2011 04:13 AM PST

KEPONG, Hartamas, Jalan Tun Razak and Jalan Gombak Batu were the hardest hit areas in Sunday's thunderstorm which uprooted trees and caused havoc in the city.

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) hotline received 61 complaints from 24 locations in Kepong and Batu alone, while 14 from Bukit Bintang, 13 from Setiawangsa, Wangsa Maju and Titiwangsa, five from Segambut, three from Cheras and one complaint each from Lembah Pantai and Bandar Tun Razak.

The storm also caused a massive gridlock along Jalan Tun Razak heading towards PWTC, Jalan Tun Razak from Bulatan Pahang heading towards Cheras and Jalan Maran off Jalan Kuantan where fallen trees blocked traffic flow.

Apart from uprooting trees and causing a massive jam, the storm also damaged two cars and three motorcycles at the Jelatek People's Housing Scheme in the city as well a City Hall owned canteen at the Tennis court in Jalan Tembeling.

No one was hurt or injured in the 4pm thunderstorm.

In a statement to the media, Kuala Lumpur Mayor Tan Sri Ahmad Fuad Ismail commended KL-ites' proactive attitude in calling its hotline to inform about the incident.

"This is good as Kuala Lumpur residents are showing that they care and want help solve the city's problems.

"Their working together with us is commendable and we hope to see them do so in other aspects in the running of City Hall,'' Ahmad Fuad said.

"Without them, it would have been impossible for us to indentify the areas that were badly hit by the thunderstorm in a such a short time. I thank them for that,'' said Ahmad Fuad.

With the help of KL-ites, it took DBKL three hours to clear up the debris. About 75 people comprising officers and contractors from City Hall, Fire and Rescue department and the police cleared the areas affected.

The storm also brought down eight large trees down on business premises and cars.

Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue operations assistant director Azizan Ismail said they received calls from Hartamas, Jinjang, Kepong, Jalan Tun Razak and Jalan Gombak.

"We also received calls concerning a collapsed ceiling at a condominium in Bandar Sri Manjalara and a fallen billboard in Kepong," he said.

"We dispatched our vehicles from the nearest fire and rescue units to remove the fallen trees and objects and direct traffic flow," he said.

Sunday's storm also caused caused damage to a billboard and an apartment roofing. It also uprooted some trees in Selayang.

A huge billboard fell down along Jalan Kepong opposite Komplex Desa in Kepong, causing curious motorists to stop and look.

According to Bukit Lanjan assemblyman Elizabeth Wong, the storm in Taman Desa Jaya, Desa Aman Puri and Taman Ehsan in Kepong started about 5.30pm and lasted a few hours.

She said the roof of Punchak Desa apartments in Kepong were blown off and 10 families had to be evacuated to a local community hall nearby.

She said they would also look into providing aid to these families and those affected by the natural disaster.

The Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) staff and representative from the district offices are clearing up the uprooted trees in these area and also handling the evacuation process of these families.

"I would advice people to be more prepared for the unpredictable violent storms and rainy weather ahead. The respective landscape department of the local councils throughout the Klang Valley should start trimming the trees immediately to avoid future disasters from occurring.

"There should be more suitable trees planted by local authorities in the Klang Valley so that these would not be uprooted during a storm," she said.
