2,500 mangrove tree seeds planted for sustainability Posted: 09 Nov 2011 02:06 AM PST PONTIAN: A total of 2,500 mangrove tree seeds were planted during the Kembara Redah Lumpur programme organised by Tanjung Pelepas Port (TPP) and Sungai Pulai Mangrove Reserve management recently. Hundreds of participants comprising government agency staff and secondary school students around Gelang Patah, planted the mangrove species, Rhizophora Apiculata and Rhizophara Murconata, on a one-hectare site. "With such a programme, we hope that the young generation will develop concern and responsibility towards conserving the stability of the environment, especially mangrove swamps," said TPP Corporate Communication, Property and Free Zone department general manager Md Derick Basir. Meanwhile, Southern Johor Forest officer Rajihan Rahim said TPP's initiative ought to be emulated by all parties, as the country's heritage like mangrove swamp forests needed continuous monitoring to ensure they were not threatened. Fine weather during celebration of obedience Posted: 09 Nov 2011 02:08 AM PST JOHOR BARU: Clear skies greeted many Muslims here as they performed the Hari Raya Aidiladha prayers at various mosques on Sunday. At Masjid An-Najjah in Taman Daya, a total of 18 cows were sacrificed after the prayers at around 8.30am. Civil servant Mohd Faiz Ahmad, 26, said the fine weather was a blessing to him and his family as it was easier for them to commute to the mosque and conduct prayers. "I prepared several umbrellas in case the weather changed but am glad that it didn't," he said adding that his house was a short walk away from the mosque. Mohd Faiz explained that he had also helped in carrying out the act of sacrificing the cattle at the mosque. Student Mohd Fadli Kassim, 23, was also happy that the weather remained clear throughout the prayers. "It has been raining for the last couple of days and to have clear skies for Hari Raya Aidiladha is a blessing," he said. He added that he always looked forward to the day as it was also an opportunity for him to meet up with family members and friends. Hari Raya Aidiladha is celebrated by Muslims to commemorate the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his son Ishmael as an act of obedience to God, before God intervened and provided him with a sheep to sacrifice instead. Cops nab five involved in theft of nine cars worth RM650,000 Posted: 09 Nov 2011 02:10 AM PST JOHOR BARU: A car theft syndicate has been stealing cars including those belonging to Singaporeans and parking them at public carparks to avoid arousing suspicion. Police uncovered their modus operandi after they nabbed five people including a women and recovered at least nine cars worth RM650,000 in a series of raids in the city recently. Johor Baru (South) OCPD Asst Comm Zainuddin Yaacob said the cars including models like BMW, Toyota, Honda and Mitsubishi, were found parked in public parking lots and some of the cars had Singapore number plates. "We raided a budget hotel in Yong Peng on Thursday and nabbed the suspects aged between 23 and 37 years old," he said in a press conference here. He added that the syndicate, known as Geng Panjang, has been operating since 2001 and several members were still at large. "We believe that the syndicate steal cars at parking lots and disposes them for as low as RM7,000 each," said ACP Zainuddin, adding that two of the suspects had previous criminal records and all of them were drug addicts. He added the case was being investigated under Section 379A of the Penal Code for vehicle theft, Section 411 of the Penal Code for possessing stolen vehicles and Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. On a separate matter, ACP Zainuddin said the police were looking for the next of kin of a burnt victim found in an oil palm estate in Plentong on Oct 23 "The body was found by two estate workers and we believe that it had been lying there for about two weeks. "The victim is about 158cm tall, wore a Renoma shirt and a pair of slippers," he said, adding that the victim was aged between 25 and 45 years old and had no identification documents. ACP Zainuddin said the post mortem report revealed the victim died of strangulation and his jaw was broken and the case was classified as murder.
