KUALA TERENGGANU: The state is ready to face the possibility of the worst floods ever.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Said said 112 frontline bases have been equipped with supplies such as food and blankets.

"The Welfare department has been tasked with equipping supplies especially for places cut off during floods.

"We also have 347 relief centres able to accommodate more than 51,000 flood victims," he told newsmen after the state executive council meeting recently.

He added that all centres including all mobile units have been stocked with two weeks supply of food and toiletries, which would resupply the rations when needed.

"Our disaster committee consisting of the police, Fire and Rescue Department and Civil Defence Department have been equipped with boats and trucks to evacuate the victims," he said.

Ahmad also called on all disaster relief workers to evacuate victims early and not wait until the last minute to do so.

"The people's lives are our priority.

"We will do everything we can if the worst occurs," he said.

Website set up to give more info on monsoon

Posted: 04 Nov 2011 04:07 PM PDT

MALACCA: A website has been set-up by the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) as a pre-emptive measure to warn those living in low-lying areas on impending flood during the year-end monsoon season.

The website could also be accessed by registered social intent sites users like Facebook and Twitter to obtain instant information on approaching floods.

Deputy Natural Resources and Environment minister Tan Sri Joseph Kurup said public could assess the "Public InfoBanjir" website to obtain the latest information such as swollen rivers and other matters relating to floods.

"We anticipate torrential rains to sweep across several states especially in flood areas in the east-coast, hence the website will be useful for early preparation to brace for any situations," he said after opening a seminar on Effective Management of Water Resources and launching of the website at a leading hotel here, recently.

The seminar was attended by over 200 participants who used the event as a platform to discuss and share resources on how to effectively manage national water supplies through an integrated method.

Kurup said the website would be updated regularly to enable help and evacuation to be initiated without any delay.

"The launching of this dedicated website is timely and I hope the DID officers will keep enhancing the contents accordingly so that information can reach beforehand," he added.

DID director-general Datuk Ahmad Husaini Sulaiman who was present at the event said cameras would also be installed at identified flood prone areas so that public accessing the website could get real-time view of a situation.

KOTA KINABALU: Parents had an insight into their child's amazing potential to learn in the Enfagrow A+ Smart Camp at the City Mall here recently.

Held for the first time in Sabah by Mead Johnson Nutrition (MJN), a manufacturer of premium growing up milk, the camp enabled children to explore and discover their interests in different areas while parents observed and further encouraged their children.

MJN Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei general manager Roger Dallas said the company has successfully organised the camp for five consecutive years and received overwhelming response from parents.

"Each year the Enfagrow A+ Smart Camp features interactive games and activities customised for children of different ages. The concept for Enfagrow A+ Smart Camp this year is 'Amazing Achievers'.

"At Mead Johnson, we believe that every child has within them an amazing potential to learn.

"And parents hold the key to unlocking their child's potential, and giving them the best start in life. They are all the 'Amazing Achievers' that we believe every child can be," Roger said.

Through the camp, he hoped the parents would discover their children's talents and develop a passion to learn.

The Enfagrow A+ Smart System is a comprehensive mental and physical empowerment concept based on research findings that showed there are four factors that could efficiently support a child's development throughout their childhood years.

The four factors are Smart Nutrition, Smart Language, Smart Music and Smart Play.

On the importance of nutrition to a child, Roger said as a world leader in paediatric nutrition, Mead Johnson has been developing science-based nutrition for more than 100 years.

"The Smart Nutrition quadrant features the new Enfagrow A+ and Enfakid A+ with DHA PLUS, which contains increased DHA levels that help meet expert recommendations.

"DHA is important for brain function and it is required during the critical period of brain development and growth. In fact, 90% of brain growth occurs in the child's first five years of life," he said.
