Terminate errant contractors after two warnings

Posted: 18 Nov 2011 03:44 AM PST

CONTRACTORS who failed to provide regular service for the various local authorities will be terminated after two warnings.

State local government committee chairman Ronnie Liu said this had to be done in the best interest of ratepayers.

''We have issued directives to the local councils to act tough against contractors if they don't buck up after two warnings," he said in his reply to a question from Dr Abd Rani Osman (PR-Meru).

Liu said the state would be appointing committees at the zone level of the local authorities so contractors would be closely monitored.

''The committees are responsible for monitoring and providing feedback on the performance of the contractors to the council.

''They will also give recommendations to the council on whether the service of the contractors should be continued or terminated," he said.

Hanging up on Ah Longs in public areas

Posted: 18 Nov 2011 03:43 AM PST

THE Selangor Government is fully backing the Housing and Local Government Ministry in its efforts to disconnect the contact numbers of loan sharks or Ah Longs that are displayed in the public places.

M. Manoharan (PR-Kota Alam Shah) through his written question asked the state about the measures taken to curb the increasing number of loan sharks in the state.

He also asked the state to provide a racial breakdown of people who borrowed money from the unlicensed syndicates.

State local government committee chairman Ronnie Liu said the local councils had been reminded that the posters and any form of advertisements put up by the loan sharks must be removed.

In a move to control and eradicate the activities of loan sharks, Liu said, the local authorities had also came up with brochures advising the public against falling into the traps laid by the illegal moneylenders.

"The local councils will submit the contact number of loan sharks to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission for further action.

"They are also using anti-stick substance to prevent such advertisements from being stuck in public places,'' he said.

Manoharan added that the state government had been holding regular meetings with the local authorities so that it would be kept updated on the matter.
