| Donald wins Disney event and money-list title Posted: 23 Oct 2011 03:52 PM PDT Oct 23 (Reuters) - World number one Luke Donald captured the PGA Tour money-list title after winning the season-ending Disney Classic on Sunday with a scintillating final round that included six back-nine birdies in a row at Lake Buena Vista in Florida. The 33-year-old Briton, bidding to become the first player to win the orders of merit on both sides of the Atlantic, fired an eight-under 64. Donald, who also leads the order of merit in Europe, mixed 10 birdies with two bogeys to record a 17-under total of 271, two ahead of American Justin Leonard. "That was tough, it wasn't looking good. I really hadn't got on a run and I timed it pretty well, the back nine when everything was on the line," Donald told reporters after taking his U.S. prize-money haul this season to $6.68 million. "This was a tremendous year for me. It's very, very satisfying." The Englishman needed to finish no worse than in a two-way tie for second place to take the money-list honours and entered the final round five shots behind the tournament leaders. He started the week in a head-to-head battle with American Webb Simpson for the order of merit title. Simpson, playing the final round with Donald, could not keep pace as his closing 69 left him on 13-under 275. TOUGH FOR SIMPSON "Playing against the best player in the world, I expected him to play well this week," Simpson said after finishing more than $300,000 adrift of Donald overall. "It was tough to compete against a guy that has so much confidence." Donald's second PGA Tour win of the season came in dramatic fashion as he birdied six holes in a row from the 10th. After hitting approach shots close at 12 and 13, Donald made a lengthy putt on 14 and capped his run with a long-range effort and an emphatic fist pump on 15. Donald then made par on his final three holes. Kevin Chappell (72), who held a share of the third-round lead with Leonard, ended in a tie for third place with fellow American Tom Pernice Jr (69) and South Korean Sung-Hoon Kang (68). | Malaysian rider clinches his season’s best-ever finish in Sepang Posted: 23 Oct 2011 04:05 PM PDT SEPANG: Malaysia's 125cc championship rider Mohd Zulfahmi Khairuddin bagged his best-ever finish of the season when he clinched seventh spot in the Shell Advance Malaysian Motorcycling Championships at the Sepang circuit yesterday. Starting from 13th on the grid, Zulfahmi of AirAsia-SIC-Ajo had a perfect start when he found himself in 10th spot after the first lap. Although he found himself out of the leading pack, Zulfahmi stayed patient before making his move with five laps to go. With some riders crashing out, Zulfahmi managed to finish in seventh spot. "I waited until the final moments to make my move. The strategy worked brilliantly and I am glad I managed to clinch this result in front of the home crowd," said Zulfahmi. He collected nine points from the seventh placing to move up a rung to 17th in the overall standings with 30 points. His previous best finishes this season were a ninth placing in the Czech Grand Prix and 10th in the Spanish Grand Prix. "I hope to achieve a similar result in the final round in Valencia and this result has certainly boosted my confidence ahead of the race there," he said. The final round of the world championships will be held on Nov 6. Meanwhile, wildcard rider Mohd Farid Badrul Hisham said he had learnt a lot from racing against the world's best in the highly competitive 125cc championship. A total of 32 riders began the race but only 24 finished it – and Farid was the last to finish. "It was a good experience for me. Although I have raced in the British Superbike Championship, the riders here are more competitive and more skilful. I hope to do better if I get a wildcard selection again next year," he said. | Khairul shoots down first ever individual recurve gold medal Posted: 23 Oct 2011 06:48 PM PDT PETALING JAYA: National team rookie Khairul Anuar Mohd continued his stunning rise to stardom by claiming a historic gold medal in the men's individual recurve final at the Asian Championships in Teheran yesterday. Khairul became the first-ever Malaysian winner of the individual Olympic discipline after beating Japan's Hideki Kikuchi 6-2 in the final. Khairul had beaten Taiwan's Hsieh Chung-hao 6-1 in the semi-finals earlier. National No. 1 Cheng Chu Sian faltered in the quarter-finals while Haziq Kamaruddin succumbed at the last 16 stage earlier. Khairul, Haziq and Chu Sian had combined to take the team gold on Friday. The 20-year-old Khairul, who joined the national elite squad early this year, has certainly put Malaysian archery in the spotlight with his performances of late. Khairul featured alongside Chu Sian and Haqiz at the World Championships in Italy in July, helping Malaysia to the maximum quota of three spots at the London Olympics next year. He went on to become the first Malaysian to qualify for the individual final at the final leg of the World Cup in Shanghai last month before losing to world No. 1 Brady Ellison of the United States. It was only his first appearance at the World Cup and Khairul showed it was no fluke by bagging a bronze medal at the Olympic Test Event in London two weeks ago. His performances augur well for the team as they can look forward to an-all Malaysian final in men's recurve at the Indonesia SEA Games next month – provided Chu Sian and him get their act right in Jakarta. There were more joy for Malaysia when Mohd Zaki Mahazan took the silver medal in the men's compound individual event after losing 138-146 to Iran's Reza Zamaninejad.
