Leave children and family out of politics, says PM Posted: 23 Oct 2011 08:34 AM PDT KUALA LUMPUR: Children and family should be left out of politics and family matters should not be exploited for one's own political gains, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. "You can debate about differences of policies in terms of weaknesses and implementation but you leave family aside," he said on Sunday at a press conference after attending a gathering with retired and former police officers. Najib was answering a question on whether children should be left out of politics given the attacks against Lim Guan Eng's son, whom some bloggers had alleged that he had molested a schoolmate. Najib added that politicians from both sides of the divide must adhere to the ethics of excluding families from politics. "Everyone should adhere to it including the Opposition. That is the ideal in a modern democracy to concentrate on policy matters. "We have to agree to certain ethics. It works both ways. I am not saying about the facts of this case. I do not know about the facts of this case," he added. Najib also said that peaceful assemblies could be held in stadiums as shown by Himpunan Sejuta Umat (Himpun)'s calm gathering. He compared Himpun's peaceful gathering at the Shah Alam Stadium on Saturday to the street demonstration by Bersih 2.0 in July and said there was a vast difference between the two. "Congratulations to them (Himpun) as their assembly took place in a calm and controlled manner. "That was actually my intention when the Government offered the stadium to Bersih 2.0 to conduct their assembly. "There is a vast difference between yesterday's assembly and the chaos during Bersih 2.0. No one felt disturbed, pressured or unsafe during the (Himpun) gathering," he added. Himpun's peaceful gathering, he added, mirrored what the Government wanted with the amendment to the Police Act which is to allow for peaceful demonstrations. "We will study what happened on Saturday as well as the norms of other countries and summarise what is suitable for a country that practises a modern and progressive democracy," he said, adding that there must be a balance between the rights of an individual, public interest and peace and stability. DAP lodges police report against Khairy Posted: 23 Oct 2011 03:58 AM PDT GEORGE TOWN: The DAP has lodged a police report against Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin for alleged criminal defamation against Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng's son. Party chairman Karpal Singh said they would also be initiating legal action for a tweet Khairy made on Oct 17 on the issue. "The damages are going to be 'very, very' high. The attacks on Lim's 16-year-old son for allegedly molesting a schoolmate will become a point of contention in the next general election," Karpal said in a speech during a handing-over ceremony of houses to Kampung Buah Pala residents here Sunday. "We all have children. As Lim has rightly said, we (politicians) are political targets; come for us, not our children," he said. Karpal lodged a report at the state police contingent headquarters on Penang Road at about 5pm. Related Stories: |
