City Hall carries out enforcement action to clean up streets

Posted: 14 Oct 2011 02:00 AM PDT

KOTA KINABALU: A 59-year-old man receiving welfare assistance was among 19 people rounded up for begging in the state capital recently.

The man told welfare officers that the RM300 he received every month was insufficient for his upkeep, forcing him to ask for more money on the streets.

The officers counselled him on the laws against begging before letting him off with a stern warning.

The man together with 10 other locals were released after the two-hour operation around the central business district of the state capital.

Six others who were foreigners were handed to the police before further action was taken by the Immigration Department.

Kota Kinabalu City Hall director-general Datuk Yeo Boon Hai said they were taking a friendly approach towards vagrants and street kids at the moment by letting off locals with just a caution.

"We have been getting a lot of complaints about beggars and vagrants in the downtown area on our Facebook page," Yeo said.

Under the instructions of Mayor Datuk Abidin Madingkir, City Hall held the exercise with the assistance of other enforcement agencies, he added.

Yeo warned that should the same beggars be found on the streets again, a tougher penalty would await them.

"In the next operation, we will arrest them and bring them to court where they face a maximum two weeks' in jail and RM50 fine under the city's by-laws," he said.

He also sought cooperation from the public to not give handouts to beggars as that would encourage them to continue roaming the streets of Kota Kinabalu.

Wild encounters at endurance rally

Posted: 14 Oct 2011 01:56 AM PDT

JOHOR BARU: An encounter with a wild horse was among the highlight of Rela officer Major S. Aruel Prakash's 21,000km trip to China.

He said the animal was majestic, standing just metres away from his four-wheel drive Mitsubishi.

"The horse was white and I thought that I might have been dreaming.

"It happened when I was taking a break in my car at a mountain area in Laos," said the 43-year-old, adding that he had never seen a wild horse before.

Aruel, who had been diagnosed with diabetes when he was 18, also said the weather conditions, narrow roads and floods were among the challenges that he faced.

"The left-hand drive vehicle that we used was also really hard as, for the past 20 years, I have been using right-hand drive vehicle," he added. "I managed to avoid the flooded areas and also heavy downpours in Thailand as I knew the short cuts and also the mountain tracks from my previous trip there," he said.

He was speaking at the finishing ceremony for the Endurance Rally into China (Enrich), which was organised to educate people about diabetes and to show that those who have the disease can lead normal lives.

Recounting his journey, Aruel said the price of diesel was quite high in certain countries.

"I had to fork out my own money for fuel and other expenses," he said, adding that the price of diesel per litre in Thailand was RM1.90 and in Laos, RM4.80.

The endurance rally from Malaysia to several countries such as Thailand, Laos and China started on Sept 25.

Aruel also distributed around 300 glucose meters at several stops on his 13-day long journey.

"The journey was tiring, but I managed to complete it without any incidents and I hope that my story will inspire other diabetics in the country to never give up," he said.

Aruel also drove to Laos last year for the same purpose.

He planned to drive to India for his mission next year.
