Authorities to come down hard on illegal gambling outlets

Posted: 29 Sep 2011 06:30 PM PDT

MALACCA: Clandestine operations employed by operators of illegal internet gambling outlets here has made it tough for the city council here to thwart such activities that is reported to be mushrooming here over the past couple of months.

The operators were now occupying the upper floors of shoplots and only allowing selected patrons into their premises while camouflaging their operations as licensed cybercafes.

Mayor Datuk Zainal Abu said he had directed his enforcement officers to closely monitor such operations and act against them at once without accepting any explanations from unlawful operators.

"We will continue to intensify operations with the co-operation from police to eradicate the existence within the jurisdiction of the council," he said.

Zainal said the council has raided 15 such premises on Monday night but only one premise was discovered to have offered illegal gambling software.

"We have obtained court orders to raid all these premises and confiscated 14 table-top computers during our operation.

"We believe other operators got a wind that we have launched an all-out war against such outlets and probably halted their operations temporarily," he said.

Zainal said 40 enforcement officers were involved in the one day operation where several gambling paraphernalias were also seized from an operator.

"I was also directed my officers to carry out undercover work to check on whether the operators would re-open after a while when the heat on the issue diminishes," he said.

Zainal added that the council will focus their operations at Tangga Batu, Tanjung Kling and Jalan Tun Perak, Taman Gadong Perdana, Taman Bertam Perdana, Malim Jaya and Taman Teluk Mas where such outlets thrive.
