Art exhibition set to attract domestic and foreign art enthusiasts

JOHOR BARU: Form two student Mohd Muiz Mohd Zukil described the state level 1Malaysia Contemporary Art Tourism exhibition as an eye opener as there were a lot of unusual artworks on display.

"The exhibition was very interesting, I liked the curious-looking rocket model with two smiling faces that makes one think out of the box.

"There are a lot of things we can learn from this exhibition as we can try to analyse the meaning behind each artwork," he said when met at the exhibition at Danga City Mall here recently.

He was among the many people who attended the month-long art exhibition, which is until Oct 15.

Art lovers can feast their eyes on 100 contemporary art pieces created by 30 local artists.

Mohd Muiz's classmate Nursadira Abdullah, 14, said that the exhibition was different than those she had been to before.

"I feel inspired after looking at the unusual artworks created using different techniques," she said, adding that she was fond of paintings depicting sceneries.

State Tourism and Domestic Trade committee chairman Hoo Seong Chang said that the exhibition, which was in its second year, was aimed at complimenting the state's tourism industry.

"I believe the exhibition will attract domestic and foreign art enthusiasts to Johor and to visit other tourist attractions in the state," he said after launching the exhibition.

The art pieces are priced at RM1,000 and above.

Besides the exhibition, visitors can also enjoy art workshops and interact with local artists at the exhibition.

The gallery starts from 10am until 10pm daily and admission is free.

Iskandar positive with prospectful developments

Posted: 25 Sep 2011 05:03 PM PDT

JOHOR BARU: The country's first economic growth corridor Iskandar Malaysia (IM) is moving in the right direction and progressing well since its inception on Nov 4, 2006.

Iskandar Regional Development Authority (Irda) chief executive officer Ismail Ibrahim said development within IM was taking place as outlined under its Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP) from 2006 until 2025.

Under the CDP, IM which spans 2,217 sq km and located in the southernmost part of Johor, would be developed into a strong and sustainable metropolis of international standing.

"Despite operating amidst uncertainties in the global economic situation, we have been able to draw huge investments," he said.

Ismail said this after a closed door briefing on the progress of IM to the Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir during his one-day working visit to Johor.

He said as of June 2011, IM has received RM76bil committed investments, of which 40% or RM30bil has been realised.

Ismail said IM would be entering its fifth year in Nov and the latest investment figure reflected the serious commitment and effort undertaken by all stakeholders.

He said 2012 would be the tipping point where projects such as Legoland Theme Park, Indoor Theme Park @ Puteri Harbour, EduCity, New Coastal Highway and Danga Bay Waterfront Development would be completed and operational.

"We have to work even harder to attract new investments and will be focusing on quality investments and not numbers, in line with the aspiration for high-income economy," he said.

He said job opportunities were plenty as IM would require about 250,000 high-skilled workers within the next 10 to 15 years bringing the numbers to 850,000 from 600,000 presently.

Mukhriz said the Government was satisfied with the achievement and progress made by IM so far and hoped all stakeholders would not rest on their laurels.

He said although IM was small in terms of size compared with other economic growth corridors in the country, it has been able to attract huge and quality investments.

The other growth corridors are the Northern Corridor Economic Region, East Coast Economic Region, Sabah Development Corridor and Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy.
