Baba Nyonya community thrill the crowd in Jonker Street Posted: 21 Sep 2011 05:48 PM PDT MALACCA: The famous Jonker Street podium was surrounded by hundreds of locals and tourists recently, as they witnessed and appreciated the colourful and cultural performances of the Baba Nyonya people. Many Nyonyas came in intricately embroided kebayas, batik sarong and beaded sandals while the Babas arrived in colourful batik shirts and neatly pressed trousers to the event. The Nyonyas also had their hair swept up in buns, decorated with flowers and gold pins. The vibrant night started with the singing of Negara Ku and patriotic songs. Some mini flags were distributed to the spectators in-conjunction with the Malaysia Day celebration. Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam who officiated the event, urged locals to be proud of the Peranakan culture and to embrace its uniqueness as their custom was part of Malacca's heritage as it reflected elements of the Malay and Chinese assimilation. He also said there would be an international Baba Nyonya festival in Dec where many competitions would be held at the UnescoWorld Heritage site. A melodious evergreen Dondang Sayang number, performed by septuagenarian Nyonya Tan and Baba Boon kept the audience mesmerized throughout the event. The duet also exchanged impromptu pantuns in a humourous style. Sri Lankan tourist, Philip Gunaraenam considered himself lucky to witness the 600-year cultural heritage performances on his second day of visit to the state. Another performance which caught the crowds attention was the Joget Baba Nyonya which was performed by 12 gorgeously-dressed Nyonyas. The performance showcased the Joget Bimpoh (handkerchief dance) and Joget Bakul Siah (traditional Baba Nyonya basket dance). They swayed harmoniously to the classical Peranakan tunes. Steve Stephens, 40, from Finland said the night was an eye-opener in understanding Malaysia's multiculturalism. "I will return and discover more cultures of this wonderful country, especially the Peranakan community," he added. A Catwalk and Umbrella Dance performed by the SJFM group was also a highlight of the event as they sang and danced to Malay, Chinese and Indian tunes. This eventful night was organised by the Baba Nyonya Unit in the Chief Minister's Department, in conjunction with the Merdeka celebration. |

Pantai Hospital Ayer Keroh celebrates Merdeka and Raya Posted: 21 Sep 2011 05:17 PM PDT MALACCA: Pantai Hospital Ayer Keroh (PHAK) was filled with glee as it celebrated the recent consecutive Hari Raya and National Day celebrations. The National Day celebration kicked off in late July right through to mid-August with an online challenge through social networking site, Facebook. The challenge required the public to answer a string of questions pertaining to the hospital and to share their best Merdeka shout out to the nation. The challenge rewarded winners with special goody bags consisting of exclusive merchandise and vouchers. PHAK also organized two roadshows promoting a healthy living with various other participating vendors in August at Hatten Square, offering free blood glucose checks, blood pressure readings, and both body mass index (BMI) and body fat analysis. The staff also handed out Jalur Gemilang flags to shoppers as part of the National Day celebrations. The festivity cheers continued at the hospital with the handing out of the flags to patients, visitors and staff in the spirit of Merdeka. Baby celebrations were also back-to-back with Hari Raya falling on the day before National Day. Parents whose newborn babies were delivered on 30 and 31 August were given baby gift packs to welcome their bundles of joy . And in conjunction with Hari Raya, more than 120 jetty, customs, ferry and taxi operators were treated to a buffet dinner at Straits Meridian Hotel as a gesture of appreciation for the operators' loyalty and continuous support throughout the years. They went home with lucky draw prizes such as Raya hampers, and unique PHAK merchandises and goodie bags. Gan Kong Hoe, PHAK chief executive officer Gan Kong Hoe stressed on the importance of commemorating both festivities as they each portrayed two celebrations of national significance. "Hari Raya and National Day are both major festivals in the country, one celebrating the end of Islamic holy month of fasting and the other, unity amongst Malaysians and the birth of a new nation. Pantai Hospital Ayer Keroh is proud to have reached out to so many people through our series of activities for both occasions", he said. |
