Their creativity paid off when they were chosen to represent the state in the 'Keceriaan Merdeka' decoration competition. School headmaster Azma Senun said everyone at the school pitched in to construct the monument, which looked almost similar to the one in Kuala Lumpur. "The teachers and students brainstormed for almost a week before we decided to construct the replica. "What better way to honour our nation's heroes and celebrate Malaysia Day than by producing a replica of the monument," she said. She added they were also mindful of the environment, thus they used recycle papers to complete their environmentally friendly monument. "The teachers, students and even our gardeners and cleaners pitched in their time and money to honour such a special day. "It is the least we could do as we wanted to express our patriotism through art," she said. Azma said the students also decorated the school with national flags while national logos and past national day themes were hung on trees. "We want to create the national day and Malaysia atmosphere at the school. "We are thankful that the end product was genuine and creative," she said adding that a 25m national flag was also hung along the school's gate and walls. Azma said she was proud of all those who took part in building the monument, which took four days to finish. "We all took part willingly in celebrating Malaysia Day. "However, if we win the national competition, then it will be a big bonus for the school," she said. |
All abuzz with new project in township Posted: 19 Sep 2011 05:40 PM PDT PAGOH: For Sekolah Kebangsaan Pagoh teacher Mohd Nor Samingin, the newly launched Pagoh University City here will help him achieve his dream of pursuing his studies and becoming a graduate. Nor, 55, said he was excited about the project and hoped it would be realised soon not just for his benefit but also for the community in the area. "I always wanted to continue my studies to do my Masters or Doctorate but never had the time and there are no universities near the school where I work," he said when met at the ground breaking ceremony recently. For food stall owner Nurliah Abdul Ghani, 48, the new education hub was just a stones throw away from her home in Taman Pagoh Jaya. She said she was excited with the project especially for her young son who just enrolled at a primary school. "I am confident that by the time my son is ready to enter into university, this place will be well developed. "I also hope that by then, with more people living and studying in the area will help improve the livelihood of the locals in the area," she said, adding that she operated a small stall near her home. SJK (T) Ladang Lanadron principal M. Tiruvengadam, 55, said the hub would help students here to have a better choice in choosing a higher education centre for them to continue their studies. "There are no universities located here as the nearest ones are either Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) in Segamat or Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) in Batu Pahat. "Students here will now have an opportunity to further their studies to the country's top universities at the education hub," he said. Meanwhile, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin in his speech at the launch of the project said the education hub would be located on a 404ha site. "The first phase of the project is expected to be completed in 2015 where 16,800 students are expected to be placed inside the hub," he said adding that among the universities in the hub would be UTHM, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Universiti Islam Antarabangsa (UIA), and Politeknik Pagoh. Deputy Prime Minister and Pagoh MP Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin who officiated the ground breaking ceremony hoped the education hub would be the choice for locals and international students. "The Pagoh Education City will be an education corridor in the northern part of the state and complement the education cluster in EduCity in Iskandar Malaysia, which is located in the south," he said. |

Department's director-general Datuk Wan Mohd Nor Ibrahim said the system was already in place but would be adjusted to ensure it was implemented effectively. "Those who have manifested a positive work attitude will be rewarded with financial incentives, promotions and department awards. "One of the main criteria to qualify for such rewards, is the years of the service of officers selected for the incentive," he said after the department's honorary awards presentation ceremony at the state Fire and Rescue Department's headquarters here recently. Some 50 officers throughout Malacca including five department's retirees received awards including the director-general's medal for officers who displayed extraordinary courage during emergencies. Wan Mohd said the reward was designed to encourage impetus officers to excel in their duties efficiently apart from maintaining a high-level of integrity. "Only three to four percent of the total manpower qualify for such rewards annually as the selection team is stringent in picking out the recipients. Those who have demonstrated exemplary leaderships and the right working attitude will get the opportunity to receive these awards," he said. He said officers who have carried-out their task beyond the call of duty especially participating in community based activities would be also duly recognised under the system. Wan Mohd stressed that officers who slack off in their duties would have to face the disciplinary panel established under the system. "We will not compromise on officers with disciplinary problems as delinquent ones will face action including expulsion and suspension," he said. Wan Mohd said at least 10 problematic officers with abseentism and drug abuse problem were dismissed each year. "We are focusing on the disciplinary aspect of our officers as their any wrongdoing committed by our personnel could jeopardise the department's image," he said. |
