Inculcate anti-crime attitude, Lam Thye urges public

Posted: 16 Sep 2011 07:28 AM PDT

TEMERLOH: Members of the public should have an anti-crime attitude and become the eyes and ears of the authorities in combating criminal activities.

Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation vice-chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said those with such a proactive attitude would be more helpful to the authorities than those who only voiced their concerns.

"The public should show more concern and take immediate action to improve safety by combating criminal activities and not just giving attention to petty issues," he told reporters after visiting Temerloh police headquarters here today.

Lee said a survey conducted by the Communication Department of International Islamic University of Malaysia found that the majority of the public were still worried about criminal activities even though the statistics showed that such activities reported in the first six months this year had declined to 21 per cent from 33 per cent for the corresponding period last year.

"We don't have to worry about the survey findings because they shows a positive impact on public concern about efforts to combat and curb criminal activities," he added. — Bernama

Fisheries dept to study fish forecasting system

Posted: 16 Sep 2011 07:27 AM PDT

KUALA TERENGGANU: The Fisheries department is studying the Fish Forecasting System (FFS) to prevent depletion of habitats from overfishing.

Its research division director Raja Mohammad Noordin Raja Omar Ainuddin said in the course of the study, the department would step up its enforcement and would seize fishermen's catch if they remained stubborn and refuse to abide by the regulations.

He said presently the fishermen were allowed to catch a maximum of 350 tonnes a year.

"In this regard, they must be disciplined and abide by the regulations set by the department. We have to protect the resources from overfishing," he told reporters after the launch of the FFS for east zone here recently.

Raja Mohammad Noordin said through the system, all trawlers would be provided with a log book to record catches which they must report to the fisheries department consistently for data collection.

The FFS is a joint project by the Malaysian Remote Sensing agency, fisheries department, Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) and National Fishermen Association. - Bernama
