Mothers gather for the World Breastfeeding week

Posted: 13 Sep 2011 03:32 PM PDT

JOHOR BARU: For first-time mother Nur Adilah Hamidi, breastfeeding her daughter allowed her to spend time with her six-month-old baby Nur Aleesya Raisah.

"Besides that breastfeeding also brought us closer," said the 25-year-old staff-nurse.

She added that she had no problems breastfeeding her daughter.

"Some mothers would face difficulties and some problems in breastfeeding their children but to me I had no problems," she said during the gathering of breastfeeding mothers organised by the Puteri Specialist hospital in conjunction of the World Breastfeeding week.

A total of 39 mothers including pregnant women attended the programme.

Jamie Lee, 38, a mother of three said that it was her first time attending such a programme.

"I find this programme very informative and helpful for mothers and pregnant ladies as some are not aware about the importance of breastfeeding," said the housewife.

Midwife Noor Jana Sujari, 25, said that she breastfed her two-month-old baby to ensure that she was healthy.

"I have fed her with formula milk before but Delisha Batrisyia Azharul prefers breast milk," she said.

Civil servant Raja Noor Hidayah, 24, who is five months pregnant, attended the programme to gain knowledge about breastfeeding.

"I have no experience and I thought I should come to this programme as it will help me in future as I have lots more to learn," she said.

KPJ Obstetrical & Gynaecological unit manager Aminah Ahmad Unni, 41, said that mothers also benefit from breastfeeding.

"Mothers who gain weight during their pregnancy can lose weight by breastfeeding and also the chances of getting ovarian cancer and breast cancer will be low.

"Through breastfeeding there will be a bonding between a mother and child and also the Intelligence Quotient (IQ) level of the child will be greater," she said.

Lactation consultant Rita Rahayu Omar, who gave a presentation during the event, mentioned about the importance of understanding the basic fundamentals of breastfeeding and its management in order to ensure healthy milk supply.

"Those who wish to find a lactation consultant can visit www.ilca.org and search the "Find a Lactation Consultant Directory," she said.
