KOTA KINABALU: The marine police seized about 2,150 litres of smuggled petrol after a brief chase with a fishing trawler at Sabah's most northern district of Kudat recently.

Kudat Marine Operations Force personnel who were patrolling waters off the district spotted the trawler heading towards the state's maritime border and decided to give chase.

"We detained two people onboard including the 24-year-old skipper," said Kudat Marine Operations Force commanding Officer Asst Supt Mohammad Aris Jambul.

They found five drums and 46 jerrycans containing petrol at the back of the boat, he added.

"We believe the boat was headed to Mangsee Island in the Philippines," he said, adding police valued the fuel at over RM90,000.

ASP Mohammad Aris said the detainees were also tested positive to drugs.

THE recent and sudden demise of 63-year-old private medical practioner Dr.Ravindran Panicker robbed the local community of an untiring and committed leader who was active in social and service oriented organisations, groups and clubs.

Despite being wheelchair bound following a spinal injury sustained during his student days in India during the 1970's, Dr. Panicker fondly known as 'doctor wonderful' never allowed his handicap to stop him in his colourful pursuits and quality of life.

Described as 'a man for all seasons', the good doctor also possessed much magnanimity and humility, coupled with a deep sense of helping others at all times apart from leading an exemplary life with his wife Susila and daughter Dr. Dhanya.

Dr. Panicker first ventured into the local scene in the early 1980's as an ordinary member of the social, cultural and sports minded Malacca Indian Association.

In 1990, he took over the assoiation's presidency which witnessed his club management and leadership skills enhanced to the fullest over a twelve-year tenure. Upon resignation, he became a trustee of the 1953-established association.

An ardent supporter of the 25-year Malacca Theatre Group (MTG), Dr. Panicker was an accomplished writer of short plays with several of his literary efforts taking to the local stage.

He was looked as a forerunner in MTG's administration, first as president and then as treasurer prior to his demise.

He was inducted as a Junior Warden with the local Masonic Lodge Elliot in 1987.

In 1992 he was elevated to Master of Elliot.

Dr. Panicker was also associated as patron of the Apex Club of Malacca Central, a service club that has its origins in Australia, the Malacca Club and the state branch of the Malaysian Medical Association. Members describe him as a passionate doctor, a self-taught computer wizard, an avid cricket fan, a superb gourmet cook, a born vocalist who could serenade any age group, an organiser par excellence and a generous person with cash, kind and advice for noble and humanitarian causes.

Fellow MTG member John Gifford aptly said, "We miss him dearly and we mourn his passing. We will always remember the good doctor as a wonderful person who enriched our lives with his presence, talents, love and kindness".

Girl’s dream comes true

MUAR: A girl's dreams of entering the university for a better future and to take her poor parents out of poverty were nearly shattered as the family could not afford her advance fees.

However, her dreams are now within reach when the Bakri MIC division and caring individuals came forward with some cash for her to enter the university.

Lim Ee Chern, 20, has been offered a place at the Sultan Idris Education University's faculty of human science to complete a degree in Malaysian Studies with Education (Ijazah Sarjana Muda Pengajian Malaysia Dengan Pendidikan) recently.

She had received a letter asking her to report at the university on Sept 7, but her financial situation was a cause for concern.

Lim, from Sungai Abong told her friends that she needed at least RM2,000 to pay her entrance fees which included lodging for one semester.

She also told them that if she decided to enter the university her parents, who were both old, sick and dependent on Welfare Department aid, would suffer further.

Without her knowledge, her friend informed Bakri MIC division chief M. Aridas, who then launched a charity campaign to collect some funds.

Aridas said although the girl's father was a Chinese and her mother was an Indian, he felt responsible to help the family.

"MIC Bakri managed to collect about RM1,500, including RM300 from special officer to Mentri Besar for Bentayan Chris Lee.

"At the same time a caring individual Lim Lei Huat also donated RM2,000 to her," he told reporters after presenting the cash aid to Lim recently.

Aridas said helping Lim to enter university was one way to bring her family out of poverty after she graduated and found a good job.

He said when Lim entered the university, her family would have no monthly income except for the RM300 monthly aid from the Welfare Department.

"We will apply for additional allocation from the department for the family," he said.

Meanwhile, Lim Lei Huat said education and knowledge were important in life and Malaysians should help one another, regardless of race or religions.

"We should not let poverty hinder anyone from seeking greater knowledge and a better future," he said.

Lim is truly a lucky girl because while receiving the cash aid from Aridas and Lei Huat, a postman arrived with a cheque of RM1,500 from the National Higher Education Fund Corporation.

"I am very grateful to everyone, especially to Aridas and Lei Huat for all the help and I promise to study hard.

"I hope to excel in my studies, find a good job and take my father and mother out of poverty," Lim added.
