Proud occasion for 35 graduating students of the Montfort Youth Centre

Posted: 11 Sep 2011 07:18 PM PDT

MALACCA: It was a proud and momentous occasion for 35 students of the Montfort Youth Centre (MYC) in Ayer Salak who were graduating after successfully completing a two-year course of theory and practical experience.

Established in 2001, the MYC provides courses and workshop training in motor mechanics and computer maintenance in line with the Malaysian Council of Vocational Training programme. The centre is managed by the Brothers of St Gabriel.

The newest graduating students are the ninth batch produced by the MYC in Ayer Salak.

It was a proud moment for parents and guardians of the graduates, knowing their sons had acquired work skills and were now confident and competent young adults ready to contribute to nation-building.

"Apart from acquiring marketable trade skills, graduates are also taught to become more wholesome individuals through character formation, guidance and counselling sessions.

"Having acquired the trade skills, self-respect and personal discipline, I am confident these young men will prove to be an asset to their employers and the pride of their families," said MYC director Bro. Robin Devasagayam.

Nineteen-year-old graduate Cho Jin Siang from Kulai, Johor said: "Before I came to MYC, I was not academically inclined. I was also lazy and did little as far as house chores were concerned. My mother was very worried about my future.

"Now after two years at MYC, I learnt the habit of not only keeping my own things tidy, but also our domitory and the centre's grounds.

"I have also improved my command of English and am now confident speaking to others, whether to my peers or to the centre's staff and teachers.

"Most of all, I have benefitted from the trade skills training and workshop course, thanks to the patient guidance of the teachers.

"I am now a qualified computer system technician and ready to get into the job market," said Jin Siang, who also won Montfort's Sportsman of the Year award.

"I am grateful to the general public for their financial contribution and support towards the MYC mission. All this generosity has enabled me to pursue my course and equip me for a better future," he added.

Located in Ayer Salak some 15km north-west of Malacca town, MYC is the third in the series of trade schools operated by the Gabrielite brothers, solely aimed at helping orphans and underprivileged youths.

Most well-known of the centres is the 52-year-old Montfort Boys Town in Shah Alam, Selangor. The Montfort Youth Training Centre (MYTC) in Sabah was opened in June 1999, followed by the MYC in Ayer Salak, Malacca two years later.

Besides classroom lectures and studies, workshop training and on-the-job stints, students also undergo character-formation workshops and counselling sessions as part of the overall curriculum.

The centre also provides accommodation to students and schedules extra-curricular activities such as sports and recreational programmes.

Freak storm wreaks havoc in village

MARANG: In the midst of celebrating Hari Raya Aidilfitri, 14 families in Kampung Pulau Kerengga here were reduced to tears as they watched their homes wrecked by a freak storm.

In the 5pm incident last Friday, Hari Raya decorations as well as personal appliances were strewn all over the village.

Each family incurred about RM15,000 worth of losses after the incident.

Villager Ramli Bakar, 47, said the storm occurred for barely 30 minutes but the destruction was so bad to the extent that roof of houses were blown off.

"Some of my neighbours, who were entertaining guests had to seek shelter the minute the storm hit.

"It was literally chaos," he said.

He added he also barely escaped as a roof was blown off and crashed meters from his home.

Terengganu Welfare, Community Development and Women committee chairman Datuk Yahya Katib said the state government would assist all victims.

"The relevant departments were sent to the village to render any assistance needed.

"We will ensure the victims are taken cared of as we want to salvage the joy of Hari Raya as much we can," he said.

Bountiful harvest

KOTA KINABALU: Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili recently launched the Tagal festival at Kampung Kitapol in Kiulu, about 55km from here.

The mid-year harvest saw about 200 kilogrammes of fish on the shore of the river. The bigger size of the high valued ikan kelah/pelian weighed about two kg each.

Dr Ongkili said that the Tagal system of protecting and managing high-value river fish in their natural habitat until their size picks premium price, had an enormous potential for profitable farm business and supplementary income for rural people.

"The system should be expanded and communities assisted to market their live produce to fetch maximum price value," he said.

The Minister also distributed RM20,000 worth of polypipes to Tagal members to improve water supply to their fish ponds.

Dr Ongkili also said that the Ministry was funding a RM6 million breeding programme for empurau fish in Tarat, Sarawak and had funded a pilot breeding farm in Kampung Tangkol, Kota Marudu.

The ministry would also commission a Pelian grower programme using biotechnology and proven reticulation system (ERAS) adapted from Taiwan.
