A treat on Arthur’s Day

Posted: 06 Sep 2011 06:32 PM PDT

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah was not left out from celebrating an event that took place over 250 years ago at a place thousands of miles away.

Arthur's Day recalls the date Arthur Guinness signed a 9,000-year lease on the St James Gate Brewery in Dublin, Ireland in 1759 and whose legacy has brought the world the iconic black brew called Guinness, named after the person who brewed it.

The Arthur's Day celebration was set up in 2009 to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the signing of the lease at St James' Gate.

In making its round at East Malaysian, Guinness lined up a party to celebrate Arthur's Day at the Shamrock Irish Pub here recently, entertaining guests with good music and promotions on pints of the favourite black brew.

More than 50 Guinness Arthur's Day parties, themed arTHURSDAY, have been planned up to Sept 22 at pubs in Kota Kinabalu, Kuching and Miri.

"Arthur's Day is a highlight of the Guinness calendar," said marketing manager of Guinness (Malaysia) Peter Khemlani.

"We are excited that this year we are able to bring the worldwide celebration of Arthur's Day to our fans in East Malaysia on an even larger and exciting scale with an exhaustive list of more promotions and activities.

Peter led the toast and launched the Arthur's Day celebrations in East Malaysia with a jam-packed night filled with performances of talented local artistes and pints of Guinness.

Malaysia was chosen to host the Asian leg of the Guinness Arthur's Day 2011 global celebrations – the biggest out of Ireland.

Strict measures to curb metal theft

Posted: 06 Sep 2011 06:31 PM PDT

MALACCA: The Malacca Government is embarking on severe measures following rampant theft of metal used for public infrastructure including popular tourist destinations here.

State Housing, Local Government committee chairman Datuk Mohd Yunos Husin said among the measures proposed include close scrutiny of metal trade to curb the spate of metal thefts that had soared in recent months.

"All scrap metal dealers in the state from now onwards should maintain inventories on sales and through this we can curb the widespread metal theft that has reached a serious level, he told The Star recently.

Mohd Yunos said the state was also mulling the possibility of revoking the permit of scrap metal dealers if they were unable to produce documentations upon checks conducted at such premises.

"I have instructed the local authorities in the state to initiate surprise checks at such places with an immediate effect.

"The dealers can lose their permits if they fail to authenticate their transactions during such checks", he said.

Mohd Yunos said he would also table a proposal during the state exco meeting to get the state government insight of the metal trade in the state and the incidents of theft.

He said the thriving scrap metal trade has marred the image of the state's infrastructure as dozens of covers of manholes and drainage especially at the tourist areas like Jonker Walk had gone missing as well as copper wires and telephone cables.

Mohd Yunos said losses have been estimated to run into thousands of ringgit while tarnishing the image of the state as a popular tourist destination.

In June, several thieves made off with 20 solid cast iron wheels that supported five ancient Portuguese cannons on top of St John's Hills in Bandar Hilir here.

Each cannon, with its four wheels, weighed between 500kg and 600kg.

The five cannons were originally used by the Portuguese to repel attacks from the sea and land in the 1500s.

The Malacca police will also embark on action to tackle the growing problem of metal theft in the state.

Malacca Police Chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Chuah Ghee Lye has instructed his officers to raid unlicensed scrapyard.

"We have directed all police stations to beef up checks at scrap metal outlets while state police and public are working together toaddress the problem", he said.

SAC Chuah also urged local folks to work closely with the police to report any attempt by irresponsible individuals to steal such metals in their areas.

"We need cooperation from the public so that the culprits can be caught by provide us information such as the registration number of vehicles used and any other relevant information." he said.
