Crafty ‘technicians’ caught red-handed with loot Posted: 01 Sep 2011 06:29 PM PDT MALACCA: Two men masquerading as air-con technicians filched dozens of air-conditioners units including those mounted on Government buildings n Malacca since beginning their unlawful act early this year. The crafty modus operandi employed by the duo, in their mid-20's, was to park their van in front of targeted buildings and will openly display gadgets used to service air-con in an attempt to deflect suspicions of passer-bys. State police chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Chuah Ghee Lye said the suspects would then dismantle the outdoor compressor units and later cart away the loot in a van. He said the suspects dexterously could dismantle these units in just five minutes when the occupants of the building were away. "These suspects were considered opportunists where they will wait for office hours to end before embarking on their criminal activities. "They act as professional technicians and those witnessing them in act would perceive that these suspects were just troubleshooting those units," he told reporters here, yesterday. SAC Chuah said the suspects will only perform their "service" task in late evenings and during off-peak hours. He said police team acting on a tip-off, apprehended the two red-handed while they were dismantling the units at Bachang here on Aug 19. SAC Chuah said upon interrogation, the duo led to the arrest of three individuals who acted as buyers. He said the three buyers, aged 25 to 41, managed scrap-metal outlet here and bought the stolen items below market price. "We will also recommend the local council to revoke the licence of the scrap-metal outlets due their illegal business transactions," he said. SAC Chuah said police also confiscated five units of air-con compressors, two units of air-con, eight units of compressor motors, a van and two aluminium ladders and service gadgets. He said with the arrest of all five, police here is confident of solving ten cases of stolen air-con reported in the state while the case is now being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code which carries a seven year jail term and fine op both upon conviction. He said that police are also probing whether these suspects were responsible for missing air-cons that were previously reported in the state. Separately, SAC Chuah said police has smashed a notorious motorcycle theft gang here following the arrest of their oversized leader nicknamed " Gemuk Gadong" on Aug 15. He said police also apprehended 12 members of the gang, aged between 13 to 27, and has managed to solve the spate of thefts involving the machines reported throughout the state. |
Families receive aid from leaders Posted: 01 Sep 2011 06:29 PM PDT KOTA KINABALU: Eight families whose homes were destroyed in a fire here recently can afford a smile now thanks to donations by state leaders. The eight families comprising 52 people were left with nothing but the clothes on their backs after the blaze at Kg Sembulan Tengah, just minutes away from the city's downtown area. They fire victims received food supplies and kitchenware among others from state Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Azizah Dun. Putatan MP Datuk Marcus Mojigoh and Tanjung Aru Assemblyman Datuk Edward Yong Oui Fah also chipped– in to provide cash donations to the victims. Azizah, who presented the donations made through the state Welfare Services Department, advised the affected families to remain strong in facing their current difficulty. |
New marine police base in Kuala Pahang Posted: 01 Sep 2011 06:28 PM PDT KUANTAN: The marine police unit will set up a permanent base in Kuala Pahang, Pekan, in view of the development of the Tanjong Agas Oil and Gas and Maritime Industrial Park which is currently under construction. The unit's 3rd regional base commander Acting ACP Azmi Ibrahim said a new route for the marine police to patrol the area was created. He added that the base would be operational on Sept 16. "There is a need for the marine police to set up a permanent base in the area as it is developing into an oil and gas hub. "The base will be equipped with proper boats and five personnel responsible in manning the area round the clock," he said at his office in Padang Lalang here recently. Acting ACP Azmi also said a lakeside police station was also established in Lake Kenyir, Terengganu which is aimed at maintaining law and order in the popular tourist attraction. He said his regional base would also be taking over duties of manning the Endau-Rompin state park from the unit's 2nd regional base in Tampoi, Johor. "A directive has been issued that the state park be placed under the purview of the 3rd regional base in Kuantan. "In terms of geographical aspect, the state park is closer to Kuantan as compared to Tampoi. "This move would also facilitate administrative work as the state park would be under the unit's office in Pahang instead of Tampoi in Johor," he said. |
