German eyewear brand Stepper makes debut in Malaysia

Posted: 29 Sep 2011 05:32 AM PDT

FANS of German eyewear brand, Stepper, now have a chance to own frames from its premium quality range as the brand made its debut in Malaysia recently.

The collection named Stepper Exclusive is lighter and uses the finest materials to make the frames.

The frames are also corrosion- resistant.

"Our frames are made from the best materials in the market; the Titanium and the TX5," said founder Hans Stepper, who was in the country for the launch.

Stepper, who has been in the industry for over 40 years, said he gained experience working as an optician in Germany before moving on to Finland.

"I am fortunate to have been in Finland at the right time, and met with a number of quite famous young designers and craftsmen.

"They taught me the spirit of simplicity and quality in life! The frames I designed are made of nitrate with decorations of gold and precious stones," he said when introducing the brand to guests.

Their designs, he said, varied from frames for daily wear to those for gala evenings, and formal and state events. This fuelled him to strive harder and eventually launch his own line in 1960.

Today, Stepper said the Europeans were no longer able to produce the frames in their homeland as costs were rising. His company moved to Shenzhen, China and has been there for 11 years.

"We know that our customers look for quality, comfort, good material. Our products are light and fashionable because we wear spectacles ourselves and we are opticians too," he said, adding that Stepper Exclusive was brought into the market not only to give customers a wider choice but to update the existing luxury eye wear brands.

For those looking to have more colours on their spectacle frames, try Pantone Universe, a collection that refers to the Pantone colour system itself.

"In the modern world of virtual importance, young people like colours, which is why we are introducing Pantone Universe alongside the Stepper collection," said Stepper.

He added that colours were the essence of most eyewear and one definitely could not run away from it.

Similarly, Pantone Universe uses high flexibility stainless steel frames which is equally light and comfortable.

At the event held in Viva Home Mall, guests including celebrity model Amber Chia had a sneak peek at the various Stepper Exclusive and Pantone Universe frames.

Suchitra a late bloomer in modelling

Posted: 29 Sep 2011 05:29 AM PDT

NOT everyone knows that they would be a model one day, at least not for Suchitra Kumar.

The 24-year-old said modelling was never on her list of to-dos and refers to herself as one of the late-bloomers in the industry.

"It's quite late for someone my age to only get into modelling now, compared to the rest who started off at a younger age," said the tax accountant.

Suchitra said her big break into the world of bright lights, cameras and fame came in 2007 when she was shortlisted as one of Female magazine's 50 Most Gorgeous People.

"It all happened so quickly, one day I was shopping with a friend at 1 Utama and he wanted to try out.

"He dragged me along to the audition and I was actually looking pale and sickly as I was not feeling well then," she said.

The magazine called her back a few days later, informing her of the results.

"It was so unbelievable that I got it and my friend who followed me didn't," she adds.

The contestants, she said, went through several rounds of activities prior to the finals.

To her utter surprise, she was crowned the most gorgeous female contestant of all the participants while Peter Davis won the title for the male category.

"I have always thought that models have to be tall and lanky, which is why I stayed away from it thinking I will never make it," said the 5ft 4in model.

Today, Suchitra, or more fondly known as Suci by her friends, juggles between her day job in Kuala Lumpur and modelling on weekends.

Although modelling occupies most of her weekends, Suchitra does not mind it at all.

"It is weird but modelling is my way of de-stressing after a hard week at work.

"It is just bliss as I love doing the whole make-up thing and going through shoot after shoot," she said, adding that her most memorable moment was appearing on the cover of a magazine in 2008.

Suchitra, who is of Thai-Indian parentage, spends her free time it with close friends over a nice dinner.

"Most of the time, I don't get to see them, so dinner or coffee with friends are valuable moments for me," she said.

For the next few months, the youngest of two siblings will be adding another 'task' to her usual routine as she has been short-listed as one of the top 19 contestants for the upcoming Miss Malaysia Universe 2012 pageant.

"Back then I was not prepared for the pageant as I felt I was too young for it, but now I am more prepared through the years and experience in modelling.

"It is also one contest that if I don't try it now, it will definitely be too late for me later," added Suchitra.
