Demo on horseback archery during horse show

Posted: 19 Sep 2011 03:53 AM PDT

A HORSEBACK archery demonstration will be held during the 1Malaysia National Horse Show at the Selangor Turf Club Equestrian and Sports Centre in Sungai Besi, Kuala Lumpur from Sept 23 to 25.

Two Malaysians — Azharul Amani Abdul Aziz and Marshal Ajail — will display their horseback archery skills.

Adruja Horseback Archery Club president Sheikh Fuad Sheikh Mahmud said the duo, both members of the Malaysian Armed Forces Equestrian Club (MAFEC), have been given the task to perform during the National Horse Show.

Sheikh Fuad, an accomplished horseback archer, said he would not be able to perform at the horse show due to prior commitments.

But the 47-year-old went through a training session at the Selangor Turf Club recently.

Clad in traditional attire, as required by rules of the World Horseback Archery Federation (WHAF), Sheikh Fuad displayed his skills for about 30 minutes.

"Horseback archery requires the use of a traditional bow and involves 80% to 90% riding skills. A horseback archer will have to depend on his riding skills more. He has to hold the bow and arrows and balance himself on the horse.

"The horse will be moving at high speed. The rider cannot afford to take any chances or he will fall,'' said Sheikh Fuad.

Besides the horseback archery demonstration, the STF have also lined up a host of exciting events covering the major disciplines of equestrian competition — dressage, combined driving, endurance riding and show jumping.

A 20km endurance ride, to raise funds for charity, will be held on Sept 24. Winners will be donating the prize money to charitable causes.

The expo village will have an equine-related products and services, international farriery competition, pony and carriage rides and carriages from different eras.

Admission to the horse show, open from 10am to 6pm daily, is free. Log on to www.selangorturfclub.com/nhs2011 for more information.
