Hitmen fail to tame Wildcats

MALAYSIA'S Dexion Wildcats won the Asian Division title for the third season when they defeated Hong Kong Hitmen 9-4 in the final of the Malaysia International Ice Hockey tournament at the Sunway Pyramid Ice in Subang jaya recently.

It was an exciting match but Dexion Wildcats had two reliable strikers in Gary Tan and Loke Ban Kim. Both combined well to get the goals for Dexion Wildcats.

Gary, who was Malaysia's captain in the 2007 and 2011 Asian Winter Games, scored four goals while Ban Kim was on target thrice.

Dexion Wildcats other goals came from Jeremy Chee and Teh Ton Tee.

Gary said they played with confidence and led 5-0 during the early stages of the game.

"But we took it easy in the closing stages. It paved the way for Hong Kong to score. For us, it was a memorable outing as we became the champions for the third time," said Gary.

Dexion Wildcats' Ban Kim was the Asian Division's top scorer with 16 goals while teammate Daniel Chew was voted as the best defender.

In the International division, Singapore Manimals became the champions following a 6-3 win over Hong Kong Tigers in the final.

Hong Kong Penguins were champions in the Under-10 category.

In the final, the juniors from Hong Kong upstaged Malaysia 6-1 while Singapore Ice Dragon edged Hong Kong Penguins 4-3 in the Under-13 age group.

The four-day competition was organised by the Malaysian Ice Hockey Federation (MIHF) while the sponsors were Sunway Pyramid, Sunway Pyramid Ice, Dexion, Perskindol, Mesuma, Revive, Jungle Magic, Renault and Mountain Dew.

MIHF president Datuk Lee Hwa Beng said the tournament had grown in size and popularity since 2009.

"We have included the junior categories which had garnered a lot of interest.

"We have teams from Hong Kong, Thailand and Singapore," said Hwa Beng after the prize giving ceremony.

He said proceeds from the tournament would go towards youth development programmes and charities.

"We are proud to take the sport to this level and hope ice hockey will capture the interest of more youngsters."

The PJ Open squash championships will serve as a ranking competition for juniors in Selangor.

The Under-9, Under-11 and Under-13 age groups, for both boys and girls, in the championships starting at the PJ Astaka today, will determine the players' ranking in Selangor.

Organising secretary Mary Ong said they had received overwhelming response for the championships.

"The PJ Open is unique as it caters to all age groups.

"Our focus will be the juniors as it will be a platform to gauge their progress," said Mary.

The championships, organised by the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), is supported by Milo, Prince and Sports Toto.

MBPJ secretary Mohd Puasa Mohd Taib said the three sponsors had been strong supporters of the championships.

"We are grateful to them. They have been with us since 1979.

"Their commitment and support has ben crucial in making the championships a success," said Mohd Puasa.

Besides the age group sections, the competition has six categories — Division One, Division Two and Division Three for men; Division Two for women; men's veterans (50 and above) and men's veteran (40 and above).
